Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Pray For Snow On The Fly

Share

As in many things, our dear state is divided on the subject of snow sports. Those who don’t ski or board resent those who do for getting excited about the cold and showing up for work after a “sick day” with goggle tan lines. Those who do ski or board look down upon the nons for their constant complaining about the ridiculous cost of winter sports, the damn cold, the stupid snow and driving conditions. This gap must be bridged. Let’s all think about snow sports while drinking our to-go flight today, Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Pray For Snow

Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Dogfish Head On the Fly

Share

Peaks & Pints has Delaware on the brain. Sam Calagione started making beer in 1995 when he opened Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats in the beach community of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. It was the smallest commercial brewery in America at that time. Within a few successful years, the company activated a major expansion, switching from making very small, homebrew-style batches to industrial-sized sessions in a sizeable brew house. Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ales expanded and moved to a 100,000 square foot facility in nearby Milton, Delaware in 2002. They’re one of the largest craft brewers in America but yet there

Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Stout Day On the Fly

Share

The nights are longer. And colder. Peaks & Pints will serve five beers as dark as the 5 p.m. sky for today’s to-go beer flight as it’s International Stout Day. The original “stout porters” of 18th century London were brewed for their heartiness in the face of harsh storage conditions. That’s right; stouts didn’t start as a style; it started as an adjective. Had you walked into a pub around 1750, you likely would have called for a stout porter. Then in the early 1800s, the Irish brewery Guinness brought the alcohol content down to just over 4 ABV, and

Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Guinness Variants On The Fly

Share

Arthur Guinness actually began by brewing ales and porters. It wasn’t until 1819, with the introduction of Daniel Wheeler’s black “patent” malt, that stouts began to be brewed. The words “dry” or “Irish” are often tacked on to “stout” in order to differentiate it from English and American sweet or milk stouts, which usually contain oatmeal or lactose. Yes, the Guinness brewery in Park Royal, London closed in 2005. The production of all Guinness sold in the UK and Ireland was moved to St. James’ Gate Brewery, Dublin. Evidently, it’s National Sandwich Day! Or, so says the Internet. Peaks & Pints buys into it. Why wouldn’t we want an excuse to bask in the wonderfulness that is meat and/or veggies and condiments wedged between two slices of glorious bread? Savor it. We won’t see a full moon on Halloween again for 19 years. On this fateful Halloween night, the stars will align to present us with a fittingly spooky full moon — and a “blue moon” at that. But don’t expect a blue hue when you gaze up at the sky; the “blue moon” phrasing is more of a distinction, and less of a comment on the actual color. However, you can appreciate the rarity of the phenomenon. Because of assorted Leap Years and the moon’s orbit, this 19-year cycle has been off by a day since 1944 — the last

Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Autumn IPAs On The Fly

Share

Why an IPA flight the day before Halloween? First, the majority of the world’s hops are harvested in late summer, starting at the tail end of August and stretching into September. After harvesting, most hops are kilned and pelletized, a process that can last until it gets cold. Brewing a beer when the hops are at their freshest, for the brightest possible hop character, happens to land at the beginning of winter. Second, this time of year IPAs carry a little bit more malt, incorporating adjuncts like cedar, and a touch more alcohol to shake off winter’s chill. Stop by
