Mike Klucznik and his wife, Sheila Mullen, opened farm brewery Fat Orange Cat Brew Co. in East Hampton, Connecticut, on Aug. 13, 2016. The longtime homebrewer Klucznik wasn’t a cat person until he met Mullen’s orange-and-white feline, Billy, whose memory now lives on with the brewery. Before they launched Fat Orange Cat, Klucznik worked as a CPA and Mullen as an American Sign Language teacher. Klucznik’s homebrewing medals began to pile up so they opened the brewery as a place to store the medals — and showcase his talents. Today, Klucznik, as brewmaster, works with head brewer Carla Waclawski to

Last Saturday, the Seattle Mariners clinched an American League Wild Card win over the Blue Jays and advanced to the AL Division Series against the Houston Astros. The Houston Astros stunned the Seattle Mariners, notching an 8-7 walk-off victory on Tuesday in Game 1. The two sides meet at 12:37 p.m. today in Houston. The Astros and the Mariners know each other well, both being members of the American League West. They faced each other 19 times in regular play this season, with the Astros winning 12 of those games. Houston finished the season 16 games ahead of Seattle. The
Running To Stand Stillwater with Brian Strumke Visit Peaks & Pints Thursday, Oct. 20, to meet former iconic gypsy brewer Brain Strumke, founder of Stillwater Artisanal Ales, as we welcome him to his new home in Washington state. We’ll tap several of his beers that he brewed at his new home base at Talking Cedar Brewery & Distillery, which sits on tribal land in Rochester on the southern edge of Thurston County. Strumke might have stickered many a brewery across the world — and by stickered we mean slapped his Stillwater Artisanal Ales sticky label on a brewers’ refrigerator or
The Seattle Mariners beat the Toronto Blue Jays yesterday in the first game of their American League wild-card series. Game 2’s first pitch is scheduled for 1:07 p.m. today with Seattle pitcher Robbie Ray on the mound with a 12-12 record and a 3.71 ERA this year. Ray won the Cy Young Award as the AL’s best pitcher while playing for the Blue Jays in 2021. He faces Kevin Gausman, who earned a 12-10 regular-season record with a 3.35 earned-run average. Peaks & Pints will have the game on paired with our second to the last day of our Fresh
Gabe Fletcher, the head honcho at Anchorage Brewing, started his career at Midnight Sun, another Alaskan brewing company. After 13 years of helping cultivate an image of creating adventurous beers, Fletcher decided to part ways with Midnight Sun and strike out on his own. In 2011, Fletcher released his first Anchorage beer. Turns out Fletcher’s meticulous attention to detail and brewing expertise combined to make some amazing beer. The brewery took off, eventually moving to its own brick and mortar in 2014. Today, Peaks & Pints presents a to-go flight of recent Anchorage beers to arrive in our cooler — a
Seattle native Josh Pfriem began homebrewing while at Western Washington University in his early 20s then moved to Utah as a ski bum. He worked at Utah Brewers Cooperative for a few years before moving back to his old college town of Bellingham to brew at Chuckanut Brewery, where he helped win the Great American Beer Festival Small Brewpub of the Year in 2009. He moved to Hood River, Oregon to work at Full Sail but left in December 2011 to open pFriem Family Brewers — across the highway from Full Sail along the banks of the Columbia River —
Blueberries. Who doesn’t love them? When we can keep the birds from eating the fruit, blueberries are one of the most rewarding edibles in the garden. They don’t take up a huge amount of space, and they are easy to grow in our area, given sun, acid soil, and plenty of water. And the plants are beautiful. To top it off, raw blueberries are among the most nutrient-rich plant foods available — low in calories and loaded with plant nutrients such as soluble fiber, minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants. Most importantly, crisp, sweet blueberries balanced with tangy cider apples makes for
Geoffrey Barker and Andrew Pogue met as members of the North Seattle Home Brew Club. They both love saisons and sours. They traveled to mixed-fermentation guru Jester King in Austin, Texas, where they added to their friendship circle. The duo spent years looking for a place to launch their brewery. Eventually they landed in a former home of an orchid retailer, a boxy, lightly industrial building at 936 Northwest 49th Street, in the thick of Ballard’s brewery district. With the help of Jester King, Barker and Pogue opened Fair Isle Brewing in January 2020 focusing on mixed-culture and wild beers,

The Belgian quadrupel is the strongest in a series of Trappist styles, beginning with the single (better known as an abbey), the dubbel (double) and the tripel (triple). Quads are the strongest of the Belgian beers, often over 10 percent ABV. The monks seem to have stopped at four. They probably passed out. Quad is a dark beer that ranges from black to deep red or garnet, with a rich bold maltiness that combines with yeasty hints of raisin, dates, figs, grapes, and plums. The quad is not hoppy. It’s known for alcoholic warmth and a complex sweetness, with wine
Craft beer enthusiasts strolling along the Peaks & Pints cooler are in for a scare — and it’s not one of those Grains of Wrath Brewing cans, although it could be. Skeletons suddenly have invaded our craft beer lodge in Tacoma’s Proctor District. These mysterious characters come courtesy of Great Notion Brewing, the Portland, Oregon, brewery, and their talented illustrator, Chad Eaton. In addition to the bears and Sasquatches, Eaton draws a skeleton named Moss on their hazy IPA cans. Skeletons, our internal structure, are meant to be hidden, which makes them spooky to see — even if they’re playful
Pronounced “goo-zah,” gueuze is not really a style, per se, but rather a combination of versions of another style, lambic. There are two commonly accepted spellings of lambic in the Belgo-Dutch dialect: lambiek and lambik. Lambics are sour, funky beers fermented with wild yeast and bacteria — those that live and breed naturally in the wilderness. Young lambics are sweet and inoffensive. Aged lambics will slap your face with acidity than become more delicious over time. Brewers found that by blending young and old versions of lambic, they receive the best of both worlds — a gueuze. The younger lambics
Yes, it’s National Crush A Can Day today, sometimes called National Crush Day. It’s a day dedicated to educating our country and the world about the importance of recycling. Every Sept. 27 people remember that recycling helps to conserve life and our natural resources by reducing waste, lowering carbon emissions, and saving money. It’s also the perfect day to crush a beer can. After all, beer cans are rapidly replacing beer bottles as the consumer choice. It was 1935 when the world was introduced to a beautiful and paradigm-changing concept: canned beer. Krueger Brewing Company of Richmond, Virginia walked into
Every September, Peaks & Pints presents Fresh Hoptoberfest on the masses, a month-long autumn beer party marrying up two popular seasonal beers — fresh hops and Oktoberfest. Women dressed in lederhosen. Men got fresh … hop beers. Hop farmers and malters began living together — mass hysteria! Cider can follow the same Fresh Hoptoberfest guidelines — fresh hop and the Oktoberfest style ciders also exist. Throw in the other autumn stalwart style, pumpkin, and you have The Great Fresh Hoptoberfest Pumpkin. For this week’s Peaks and Pints Monday Cider Flight we combine the three autumn styles — fresh hops, Oktoberfest,
This time of year in Washington state brings juicy plums, the smell of boiling Dungeness crab and pumpkin spice lattes. But for beer drinkers, it means wet hop beers. One of the most seasonally specific styles that a brewery can make, wet-hop (or fresh-hop) beers are brewed with just-harvested whole-cone hops rushed from farms to brew kettles to capture the most vibrant flavors and aromas of these pungent flowers before they begin to fade. This limits the brewing period to the very short hops harvest season every September, with the bounty arriving now, at least this year. Today, Peaks and
For the sixth consecutive September, Peaks and Pints is throwing a month-long autumn beer party marrying two popular seasonal beer styles on draft — fresh hops and Oktoberfest lagers — this year naming it, “Fresh Hoptoberfest For Days” as we also include a monthlong calendar of regional fresh hop and Oktoberfest events. In September 2017, in keeping with our multi-rooted sensibilities, Peaks and Pints hosted “The Hunt For Fresh Hoptoberfest,” tapping fresh hop and Oktoberfest beers daily. Crowds discovered bright, hop-hazy fresh-hop beers, just hours from field to kettle and mere days from the fermenter to their glass AND drank

Oct. 17, 1989, Charles and Rose Ann Finkel opened the Pike Place Brewery, as it was then known, in the old Liberty Malt Supply space under the Pike Place Market on Western Avenue in downtown Seattle, which was later re-named Pike Brewing Co. In May, 2021, Portfolio holding company Seattle Hospitality Group, or SHG, announced it invested in Pike Brewing. Conversations between Pike and SHG started in 2018, but COVID-19 and the passing of Pike Brewing co-founder Rose Ann Finkel, Charles Finkel’s wife, delayed the deal until last spring. With the SHG investment comes a modern brand redesign, including can
After farmers David and Brenda Simmons switched from selling their slow-moving culinary grapes to making wine, they eventually added a brewery, taproom, and restaurant to their Columbus, Indiana, farm. Then, in April 2016, their 450 North Brewing released a hazy IPA. Things blew up, in a good way. They rebranded and grew exponentially. Just as they were a pioneer of hazy IPAs, 450 North was also ahead of the smoothie fruited sour game. Their smoothie sours are often brewed with so much fruit puree that they look less like beer than a thick smoothie. These beers can clobber you with

Pacific Northwest hops are harvested each year from late August through September, which means beers brewed with the freshest hops available, also known as wet-hopped beers, arrive in early October. What are fresh-hopped beers? Simply put, they’re brews made with hops that are pulled off the bine and go straight into the kettle. The vast majority of the hops used by U.S. breweries are cultivated in Oregon and Washington. For the most part, these hops are dried and processed before being sold to professional and amateur brewers, which affects the flavor punch. With fresh hops, drinkers can expect more hoppiness,
During a career in biomedical science and healthcare, Levi Danielson walked away to pursue cidermaking professionally in 2018. After a short stint working for cidermakers in Portland, Oregon, he moved to France for a season to work on an organic farm producing cider. Producing French cider and visiting some of the best cidermakers (and some winemakers) in the world has shaped his perspective and approach to cidermaking. He launched RAW Cider Company in McMinnville, Oregon distributing large format 750ml bottles focused on cider and perry specific fruit, both family farmed and foraged in Oregon and Washington. Danielson practices traditional methods,
Triple IPA: It’s a palate-smashing beast of an ale designed for those times when a hazy IPA simply won’t cut it. Yet, the style still isn’t recognized — and debate rages among the pimpliest of beer nerds over whether it’s a style at all. Peaks & Pints believes the triple IPA is a massively hoppy beer of 10 percent ABV with outrageous amounts of dry hops, hop flavor, malt flavor, alcohol, and bitterness. The Triple IPA may be like a double IPA in hop character, but is differentiated from the style by a thick, syrupy body accented by intense hop

In 2016, MIT graduates and friends Peter Oates and Ricardo Petroni opened Equilibrium Brewery in Middletown, New York. The two professional scientists became obsessed with New England hazy IPAs burning a path to Hill Farmstead Brewery and The Alchemist. Finally purchasing a homebrewing kit, Oats and Petroni strived to create scientifically balanced beer, which they did before brewing their first double IPA, named EQM, in 2015. It didn’t hurt they were trained in water chemistry. Four years later, lines 300 deep stood before their door waiting for their latest release. Since then, they opened a second site in Middletown to

Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergsø, the founder and man behind Evil Twin Brewing, was a physics and English teacher in his native Denmark before starting Copenhagen’s Ølbutikken, a highly regarded beer store. He’s also an evil twin himself. His brother, Mikkel Borg Bergsø, brews under the Mikkeller label. Jarnit-Bjergsø, however, has done his best to outshine the good twin. He founded Evil Twin in 2010 as a nomadic brewery. Like his brother Mikkel, Jarnit-Bjergsø would concocts a recipe for his beer and hand it to another brewery with some extra capacity. This contracted brewing partner brewed, bottled, priced, and sold the beer, then

We’re guessing you disbanded your Saturday-night Dungeons and Dragons league sometime back in junior high, but for some, the geekdom continues. Who, you ask? Mathew Usher, or as he is known at Peaks & Pints, Middle Earth Matthew — our bartender, cook, and cooler keeper, fully understands what J.R.R. Tolkien tries to do linguistically and mythologically in his Lord of the Rings series. Tolkien’s books reach Middle Earth Matthew on a literary level, a historical level, a linguistic level, and who knows how many other levels. Dwarves in the barroom of the Prancing Pony bow down to Middle Earth Matthew.
Pumpkins belong to the family of Cucurbitaceae. They are classified to Cucurbita pepo, Cucurbita moschata, Cucurbita maxima and Cucurbita mixta, according to the texture and shape of their stems. Pumpkin is poor in taste and carbohydrates but high in vitamins, especially, provitamin A, antioxidants and minerals, and it is mixed with nutmeg, cinnamon and allspice to improve of its sensory properties. Pumpkin is a vegetable, which is healthy and functional, being rich in phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and vitamins, and has a low energy. That’s all fine and dandy, but today is Monday, which means we offer a to-go cider flight.
In a nutshell (or more appropriately, in a hope cone), Cryo Hops allow brewers to obtain the same amount of bittering, flavor, and aroma with a fraction of the vegetal matter included in traditional pellet or whole cone hop packaging. Let’s break it down (literally). Lupulin is a naturally occurring substance in hops that plays a large role in giving the plant its characteristic flavors and aromas. When you see a whole cone hop, lupulin is that yellow powder that clings to the green leaves. Lupulin contains many of the hop acids and essential oils that make beer delicious. The

September 2014, downtown Fargo — the prairie wind humming with grain dust and old Norse whispers — four unlikely conspirators finally unleashed their long-brewing plot. Scientist Mark Bjornstad, builder Darin Montplaisir, business wrangler Jesse Feigum, and engineer Mason Montplaisir had spent seven patient years steeped in homebrew alchemy, obsessive business scheming, Viking movie marathons, and brand-crafting so precise it could shave the beard off Odin himself. They christened their creation Drekker Brewing, a name stitched from “drekka” (to drink), “drykkr” (draft drink), and “drakkar” — the dragon-prowed warships that once prowled Europe’s waterways like beer-fueled leviathans. They began humbly: a
