Peaks and Pints Christmas Beer Flight 12.1.19

Share

You’re lagging in the Christmas spirit this year. Just like last year. And the year before. Scrooging has always been your go-to reaction to the yuletide, but as you grow older, and more sentimental, it’s increasingly unacceptable to be crotchety and contrarian. It’s unsavory. So, Peaks and Pints decide to be proactive. We will elicit Christmas cheer daily through Dec. 24, as we are closed Christmas Day. By which we mean Christmas beer. We will dedicate our daily beer flight to holiday and winter beers. After all, Christmas is about nothing if not overconsumption, and you have a lot of

Craft Beer Crosscut 11.30.19: Flight For Small Business Saturday

Cities all over the nation are supporting American Express’ “Small Business Saturday” campaign, which encourages shoppers to consider supporting their local retailers this weekend, particularly the Saturday after Black Friday. According to Civic Economics, out of every $100 spent on a small business, $67 returns to the community. Nationally, the Small Business Saturday website reports small businesses employ half of all private sector employees. Additionally, the Small Business Administration says, “for every year over the last decade, 60-80 percent of new jobs were generated by small businesses.” Peaks and Pints craft beer bar, bottle shop and restaurant is a small business

Craft Beer Crosscut 11.29.19: Flight of Dark Side Boozy Stouts

Share

Take a whiff from your Peaks and Pints taster glass, have a sip, and you’ll see. The flavors that develop when beer is aged in booze-soaked oak are stunning. Bitter, harsh stouts can turn seductive and smooth as silk. The alcohol percentage tips the scales over 10 percent, the body of the beer becomes silk-smooth, and wood characteristics — like oak, vanilla and dry tannins — sink into the roasted malts, creating a symphony of dark flavors. Today marks the last day of our Dark Side of Thanksgiving imperial stout festival, and we’re going out with a bang! We have four

Craft Beer Crosscut 11.27.19: Flight of Dark Side Russian Imperial Stouts

There are tales of Peter the Great, the Russian Tsar who traveled to England in 1689 and said to have fallen in love with strong British porter, which is weird since the style didn’t truly exist for another 30-plus years. Whatever. Peter the Great likely did have some influence on the origination of Russian imperial stouts as his modernization of the Russian economy allowed for the importation of British goods, which included beer. Running through Friday, Nov. 29, the left side of Peaks and Pints’ Western red cedar tap log houses dark elixirs, including Russian imperial stouts, which is the

Craft Beer Crosscut 11.26.19: Flight of Dark Side Oatmeal Stouts

Not all stouts — a style marked by the use of roasted malts and barley — are created equal, with alcohol levels, recipes, flavorings and textures running the gamut. From the traditional stouts that emerged after porter rose to popularity in England in the 1800s to today’s kaleidoscope of craft variations, the characteristics found within the category are myriad. This differential stout fact is front and center during Peaks and Pints’ Dark Side of Thanksgiving, an eventful week with scarce and salient selections from the dark side. Craft Beer Crosscut 11.24.19: Flight of Milkshakes

Share

The Shamrock Shake was the ultimate treat of our childhood. Back then, the shakes were just green (vibrant St. Patrick’s Day green). The flavor of a Shamrock Shake was like a leprechaun; it was really just vanilla tinted Irish-Catholic green. Although, it would probably have been too confusing to have a Shamrock Shake that was tinted Protestant orange. Milkshakes have now crept into our adulthood. Using Pectin, rich fruits, oats, and lactose to enrich the beer, Omnipollo and Tired Hands brewers were able to recreate the thick heavy and slightly creamy mouthfeel similar to a milkshake. While most brewers were

Craft Beer Crosscut 11.23.19: Flight of Espresso

Espresso made its debut in Italy in the early 20th century although coffee was already very much a part of Italian life for centuries. Espresso lovers owe their thanks for the tasty brew to Italy’s Luigi Bezzera, the owner of a manufacturing plant who wanted to speed up the time it took to make coffee. He discovered that adding steam pressure to the process produced a stronger, more robust cup of coffee. This machine used in this new quick-brew process was named the Fast Coffee Machine. The beverage produced by the machine would eventually become known as espresso, which means
