Of all the many things Peaks and Pints enjoys about the holidays, one thing sits atop that list. The parties. Sure, bourbon barrel-aged winter ales are nice, Christmas trees smell good, and candy canes are fun to suck on until they get really sharp and end up drawing blood in your mouth, but nothing — and Peaks and Pints means nothing — beats a good holiday party. Whether it’s an office party, a family party or simply a party party, the holidays are the perfect time to let loose. Tonight is The Valley’s Countdown To Christmas beginning at 9 p.m.
And he said unto them: There shall be music this night, and the music shall be beautiful. And he said unto them: This music must be played in candlelight, always and forever in candlelight, for the two belong together. And the music was played with candles, always with candles, for the two belonged together. And he said unto them: Enjoy a self-guided tour through the Meeker Mansion, frost the cookies, drink hot cider, and enjoy the Joysong Victorian Carolers perform for a magical holiday evening … by candlelight. After the magical night in Puyallup, head to Peaks and Pints for
The Washington State Fairgrounds in Puyallup has turned into a Christmas lover’s wonderland for five days as the Victorian Country Christmas festival opens at 10 a.m. Holiday music will fill the air as live musicians stroll through a festive array of Christmas décor and animated displays. Visitors can shop all day as well as enjoy the shows and a vast array of food offerings. There are also carriage rides, Santa Tram rides and the Christmas Carousel. Best of all, this extravaganza is complemented by numerous how-to-events, a wine garden and a plethora of family activities. After getting your Victorian on,
The message of Christmas has evolved over time into terms that the children of the day can comprehend. Where once we celebrated the birth of Jesus, we now find ourselves witnessing televised battles of good vs. evil, where good (signified by Christmas, Santa and presents) wins out over those trying to squelch the joyful holiday spirit. And rightly so. After all, in “The Grinch vs. Whoville,” “Kris Kringle vs. the Burgermeister,” and even “Frosty vs. Professor Hinkle the Magician, what would Christmas have been like if Rudolph hadn’t prevailed over the Abominable Snow Monster? Yes, it is a scary thought.
Peaks and Pints New Beers In Stock 12.3.19 In the fall, our palates are assaulted with pumpkin spice madness, but as November fades into December, the days get shorter and the thermostats set higher, the time of year arrives that calls for big-bodied beer, usually with a higher alcohol content, and often spices, that literally offers a warming effect. Today, Peaks and Pints New Beers In Stock 12.3.19 offers six big beers from our cooler. Cheers! This week’s Tree-dimensional Tacoma tree is the Proctor District’s official holiday Douglas fir. Tree-dimensional Tacoma: Douglas Fir I think that I shall never see A poem lovely as a tree. A tree whose hungry mouth is prest Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast; A tree that looks at God all day, And lifts her leafy arms to pray; A tree that may in Summer wear A nest of robins in her hair; Upon whose bosom snow has lain; Who intimately lives with rain. Poems are made by fools like me, But only God can make a

You fancy Pauwel Kwak Gift Box Fancy Pants Sunday: Pauwel Kwak Gift Box No doubt that person on your holiday list doesn’t need more cookbooks such as How to Drink Wine out of Fish Heads While Cooking Lobster in a Volkswagen Hub Cap, A Cookbook for a Man Who Probably Only Owns One Saucepan or Booty Food. Booty Food? “If Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw cooked, and wrote a cookbook, this might be it,” says Publisher’s Weekly of former WE Full Frontal Fashion host Jacqui Malouf’s dated cookbook, Booty Food. OK, she doesn’t, and she
You’re lagging in the Christmas spirit this year. Just like last year. And the year before. Scrooging has always been your go-to reaction to the yuletide, but as you grow older, and more sentimental, it’s increasingly unacceptable to be crotchety and contrarian. It’s unsavory. So, Peaks and Pints decide to be proactive. We will elicit Christmas cheer daily through Dec. 24, as we are closed Christmas Day. By which we mean Christmas beer. We will dedicate our daily beer flight to holiday and winter beers. After all, Christmas is about nothing if not overconsumption, and you have a lot of

Cities all over the nation are supporting American Express’ “Small Business Saturday” campaign, which encourages shoppers to consider supporting their local retailers this weekend, particularly the Saturday after Black Friday. According to Civic Economics, out of every $100 spent on a small business, $67 returns to the community. Nationally, the Small Business Saturday website reports small businesses employ half of all private sector employees. Additionally, the Small Business Administration says, “for every year over the last decade, 60-80 percent of new jobs were generated by small businesses.” Peaks and Pints craft beer bar, bottle shop and restaurant is a small business
Take a whiff from your Peaks and Pints taster glass, have a sip, and you’ll see. The flavors that develop when beer is aged in booze-soaked oak are stunning. Bitter, harsh stouts can turn seductive and smooth as silk. The alcohol percentage tips the scales over 10 percent, the body of the beer becomes silk-smooth, and wood characteristics — like oak, vanilla and dry tannins — sink into the roasted malts, creating a symphony of dark flavors. Today marks the last day of our Dark Side of Thanksgiving imperial stout festival, and we’re going out with a bang! We have four
There are tales of Peter the Great, the Russian Tsar who traveled to England in 1689 and said to have fallen in love with strong British porter, which is weird since the style didn’t truly exist for another 30-plus years. Whatever. Peter the Great likely did have some influence on the origination of Russian imperial stouts as his modernization of the Russian economy allowed for the importation of British goods, which included beer. Running through Friday, Nov. 29, the left side of Peaks and Pints’ Western red cedar tap log houses dark elixirs, including Russian imperial stouts, which is the

Not all stouts — a style marked by the use of roasted malts and barley — are created equal, with alcohol levels, recipes, flavorings and textures running the gamut. From the traditional stouts that emerged after porter rose to popularity in England in the 1800s to today’s kaleidoscope of craft variations, the characteristics found within the category are myriad. This differential stout fact is front and center during Peaks and Pints’ Dark Side of Thanksgiving, an eventful week with scarce and salient selections from the dark side. The Shamrock Shake was the ultimate treat of our childhood. Back then, the shakes were just green (vibrant St. Patrick’s Day green). The flavor of a Shamrock Shake was like a leprechaun; it was really just vanilla tinted Irish-Catholic green. Although, it would probably have been too confusing to have a Shamrock Shake that was tinted Protestant orange. Milkshakes have now crept into our adulthood. Using Pectin, rich fruits, oats, and lactose to enrich the beer, Omnipollo and Tired Hands brewers were able to recreate the thick heavy and slightly creamy mouthfeel similar to a milkshake. While most brewers were
Espresso made its debut in Italy in the early 20th century although coffee was already very much a part of Italian life for centuries. Espresso lovers owe their thanks for the tasty brew to Italy’s Luigi Bezzera, the owner of a manufacturing plant who wanted to speed up the time it took to make coffee. He discovered that adding steam pressure to the process produced a stronger, more robust cup of coffee. This machine used in this new quick-brew process was named the Fast Coffee Machine. The beverage produced by the machine would eventually become known as espresso, which means
Epic Day at Peaks and Pints When Utah gave a loud burp in 2008 removing their strict liquor laws, entrepreneurs David Cole and Peter Erickson were able to pursue their longtime dream of opening Epic Brewing — a strong beer microbrewery in Salt Lake City, like those found in their home state of California. Having started an international aquaculture company in Utah in 1992, Cole and Erickson were no strangers to food and drink (and the art of making them well), so when they teamed up with acclaimed brewmaster and fellow beer geek Kevin Crompton, the trio immediately set to

In 2010 — with his Siebel Institute education, training in Germany and Belgium, and degree from Yale tucked under his arm — Ben Edmunds opened Breakside Brewery in the quiet Woodlawn neighborhood of Northeast Portland as a restaurant and nano-sized brewery. Breakside expanded to a 3.5-bbl brewhouse while winning their first medal at the Great American Beer Festival in 2011 where they have earned medals each year since. In late 2013 the brewery expanded operations to Milwaukie, Oregon with a 30-bbl production brewery. Many awards and honors followed. This year, Breakside was named Brewery of the Year at the Oregon
There’s no limit to our love for cured meat and artisan cheese, so we’re as happy as pigs that two great things will happen tonight. First, master woodcraftsman Mark James will be in the house from 4-8 p.m. selling his beautiful charcuterie, cutting and serving wooden boards from unique and locally salvaged wood. Second, birthday boy Maui Mike and his Tacoma Charcuterie Collective will also be in the house enjoying the Peaks and Pints Charcuterie Plate and wearing Hawaiian shirts. Indeed, Peaks and Pints presents a beautiful and tasty plate of capicola, soppressata, cambozola, manchego, Beecher’s Handmade Cheddar, pickled chips,

In 2005, Mikael Dugge Engström opened Dugges Ale & Porterbryggeri (Porter Brewery) in Landvetter outside Gothenburg, Sweden. Today, Dugges Bryggeri is on the top one hundred brewers in the world list, which isn’t a surprise since they brew some absolutely phenomenal, world-class beers, as well as collaborating with some of the most exciting breweries in the game. Dugges brews most styles of beer, but have become known for their imperial stouts. Peaks and Pints presents a flight of Dugges beers, a flight we call Craft Beer Crosscut 11.19.19: Flight of Dugges. Tacoma breweries join Hoppy Holiday Food Drive Most of us are either planning our holiday menus in our head or weighing where to make reservations. But hundreds of Tacomans are not so lucky and are instead wondering where their next meal will come from. The independent craft breweries in Tacoma feel fortunate, especially with the increase in competition. And they want to give back. The Tacoma breweries support good causes in their communities throughout the year, but at the holidays they also band together to do more. When Douville Home Group and Peaks & Pints approached five such breweries with
Monday Cider Flight And A Movie: The Addams Family Ever since the classic John Astin TV series, every new adaptation of The Addams Family that’s been announced for stage or screen has carried a sniffing declaration that it’ll be more “faithful” to the source cartoons. And then what do we get? Nathan Lane. Yet Peaks and Pints is still holding out hope for this latest animated take, which screens at 7 p.m. inside neighboring Blue Mouse Theatre. Snoop Dogg as Cousin It? Christina Aguilera singing on the soundtrack? Indeed, both help co-directors Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan (the duo behind

Peaks and Pints is convinced that our co-owner Pappi Swarner’s cat, whose eyes glow in the dark, is actually an extraterrestrial spy, sent here to simply observe, monitor, and report the actions of him back to the Feline Mother Planet from whence he came. I know it sounds odd, but trust us on this one. We can hear him now, just this morning, sending back his findings: “All right, true masters, you sent me down here to live with this joker, and it’s just getting worse all of the time. And I think I’m losing my control. He still keeps
Level Three Alert Everyone knew Level Brewing would be level headed when it opened in July 2017. After all, the (way) Northeast Portland brewery’s three co-founders were well-established in Oregon beer: Jason Barbee is a former Deschutes brewer and Ex Novo head brewer, Shane Watterson is also a former Deschutes brewer and Laurelwood brewmaster, and Geoffrey Phillips is the founder of Bailey’s, the pioneering taproom in downtown Portland. Housed in a former produce market, Level has been brewing award-winning beers, when they’re not kicking it at their massive covered patio in the previous tenant’s greenhouse. Peaks and Pints has brought
