Hogwarts Legacy drops today. Finally. Avalanche Software officially announced the game in 20202, although development on the project started much earlier than that. The studio originally aimed for a 2021 release window, but delays forced PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch players access the game on Feb. 10, 2023. Anyone who pre-ordered the Hogwarts Legacy Deluxe Edition will get to play the game starting today. The open-world Harry Potter game allows players to explore the magical school Hogwarts as a young witch or wizard as they attend school, fight monsters, fly on broomsticks and cast spells — all in
In addition to growing a certified-organic heirloom-variety apple orchard on their historic 50-acre farm in Chimacum, Washington, Finnriver Farm & Cidery co-owners Keith and Crystie Kisler, co-owner Eric Jorgensen, head cidermaker Andrew Byers, and crew farm and ferment on the acreage. They grow organic veggies and fruits, which in turn are sold at local farmer’s markets and through Community Supported Agriculture, or CSA. They even operate a grainery — growing and milling their own wheat crops into organic flours, which Port Townsend bakers and restaurants appreciate. Finnriver is also a certified B corporation, meaning that a positive impact on society,
Did you hear it? This morning, as Peaks & Pints tapped six triple IPAs and one hoppy double IPA, a dog whistle like screech called hopheads from far and wide to our craft beer lodge in Tacoma’s Proctor District. Once again, we joined the Washington Hop Mob Roadshow across Western Washington showcasing the holy grail for American beer drinkers. Crafted specifically for Kendall Jones and his Washington Beer Blog’s Washington Hop Mob event last night at Reuben’s Brews, and the subsequent roadshow, which Peaks kicks off, Washington state brewers brewed double and triple IPAs showcasing complete expression of hop character
In 2016, MIT graduates and friends Peter Oates and Ricardo Petroni opened Equilibrium Brewery in Middletown, New York. The two professional scientists became obsessed with New England hazy IPAs spending more time at Hill Farmstead Brewery and The Alchemist than their laboratory. Finally purchasing a homebrewing kit, Oats and Petroni strived to create scientifically balanced beer, which they did before brewing their first double IPA, named EQM, in 2015. It didn’t hurt they were trained in water chemistry. Since then, demand forced them to open a second site in Middletown to brew more cult-classic, scientific hazy beers — beers they
Though it’s the shortest month of the year, February in Tacoma can be a long and lonely affair. Luckily, Peaks & Pints craft beer and cider bar, bottle shop and restaurant in Tacoma’s Proctor District has an antidote: Stoutuary. For 29 days in February, six taps at Peaks & Pints will once again fade to black and run wild with pitch-black ale. After all, Groundhog Day is better with stouts. Failing to respond to a chain letter is better with stouts. Super Bowl is better with stouts. So Help Me Todd is better with stouts. Valentine’s Day is better with
It will be mostly sunny today in the greater Tacoma area, but it will be a cold one. After a night of freezing rain, hail, and temperatures in the low 20s, the high will be 36 degrees today working its way to below freezing temperatures tonight. For today’s to-go beer flight, Peaks & Pints is thinking bourbon barrel-aged imperial stouts would be warming. The beer style’s flavor tends to be big, boozy, chewy and demands you slow down and savor the stouts. After all, when it’s cold outside, who wants to be gulping down cold ones? No, when you are

The idea of Holy Mountain was forged in an industrial space in south Seattle — what was formerly Alaska Copper Works on East Marginal Way. A group of homebrewers, including Colin Lenfesty and Mike Murphy, who were running out of space, especially for barrel projects, pooled resources to rent a small section of the warehouse. Almost a Speakeasy in a way, blacksmiths, metal fabricators, knife makers, artists and musicians became a proving ground for recipes and techniques that would shape the beginnings of Holy Mountain Brewing. In 2014, Lenfesty and Murphy Holy Mountain in Seattle’s Interbay neighborhood. Their oak-influenced and
In 2013, J.T. Merryweather and Chris Browhan opened Real Ale Revival, or RaR Brewing, on the banks of the Chesapeake Bay in Cambridge, Maryland. The two graduates of Cambridge-South Dorchester High School had left the Eastern Shore for college and followed careers elsewhere before taking their homebrewing hobby to the next level, and by next level we mean a professional brewery in an 80-year-old former pool hall and bowling alley with a goal of producing well-balanced American pale ales and Belgian inspired brews 10 barrels at a time. Today, Peaks & Pints welcomes RaR top Tacoma with a to-go flight
Oct. 8, 2022, Chris Elford, Dave Riddile, and head brewer Mario Cortes opened Here Today Brewery + Kitchen at 28th and Elliott Avenue in Seattle. Cortes spent time at Oskar Blues Brewery in Austin, New England’s Harpoon Brewery, Woods Beer & Wine Co. in the Bay Area, and Seattle’s Fair Isle Brewing before brewing balanced, lower-ABV beers and ancestral flavors of his Mexico upbringing at Here Today. Elford, the creator behind Navy Strength Tropical Bar and Tradewinds Tavern (formerly No Anchor) in Seattle’s Belltown neighborhood, helped create the modern design of the space complete with vintage booths and furniture from
Robert Burns was born on this day, 25th January in 1759. The national poet of Scotland’s birthday is marked around the world with readings of his poems, singing of his 300 Scottish songs, and yes, drinking Scotch whisky alongside a traditional Burns Supper. Burns died at the young age of 37, but not before producing hundreds of songs and poems. Four elements make up a Burns supper: pipes, poems, potables, and pudding — specifically the “Great Chieftain o’ the Puddin’ race,” the haggis. The Ploughman Poet famously wrote “Auld Lang Syne” but more importantly Address to a Haggis. More than just

We celebrate just about every special occasion (i.e., birthdays, really good weeks, and sometimes really bad weeks) with doughnuts. And while Tacoma doughnut options are more than plentiful, we’ve somehow exhausted our local options and began craving something new AND something worth celebrating, which meant it needed to involve craft beer. Happy National Peanut Butter Day! Seriously, it’s today. Skipping doughnuts, we’re celebrating with a to-go beer flight that combines our love of peanut butter and craft beer. Go nuts over our Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Peanut Butter Day Flight. Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Peanut Butter Day Flight
The French have never met a fruit they couldn’t ferment, so the saying goes, and in the pantheon of fermented fruits the apple is second only to the revered grape. Yet, France is the world’s largest producer of cider, or cidre. Normandy and Brittany in northern France are the main producing regions, which have been producing the beverage since the sixth century. By law, French cider makers must use specific apples designated for cider production and can only use up to 50 percent of the total volume of juice to come from apple concentrate. Ciders with a label that includes
For whatever reason, Peaks & Pints has recently received a plethora of beers brewed with coffee and beers brewed with strawberries. Since we have recently introduced to-go flights of both flavors, we decided to combine the two flavors into one flight. Berries contain one of the sweetest flavors imaginable, like fresh sugar with a hint of wonderful tart. While on the other hand, coffee is distinctly bitter and bold. The combination of these opposite flavors brings out the best in both without sacrifices. At the same time, it makes the sour and bitter notes of your cup more palatable and
Today is Baltic Porter Day, an event started by the Polish brewer and porter fan Marcin Chmielarz. In 1977, beer writer Michael Jackson penned the existence of porter brewing in Poland in his World Guide to Beer. Jackson is credited with inventing the expression, “Baltic porter,” the name by which the style is now known, even in Poland. The Baltic porter is a traditional English style, developed by the British in the 1800s for export to their buddies in the Russian Court. The Baltic porter is an interesting breed, because while it’s a porter in name and flavor, it’s not
Beer purists typically scoff at a brew that incorporates anything into its recipe besides water, malt, hops, and yeast. Offer them a beer with fruit in it and you’re bound to hear a speech on the German Beer Purity Law of 1516. But if one can get past traditionalist approaches to drinking beer, they might find that fruit can be a fantastic brewing ingredient — especially with the addition of vanillas. Today’s Peaks and Pints to-go flight focuses on blueberries and vanilla. Oh, vanilla — one of the most prized spices in the world, and we think it’s worthy of
Russian River brewery was started in 1997 by Korbel Champagne Cellars, a Guerneville, California-based winery specializing in “California Champagne,” or sparkling wine of the méthode champenoise persuasion. Korbel’s winemaker was also a passionate homebrewer and talked his boss into opening a brewery. Vinnie Cilurzo, who had worked at Korbel for several years, was hired to do it. Immediately prior, Vinnie had been churning out double IPAs at another brewery called the Blind Pig. Those beers fell on deaf ears, but Pliny soon made its mark. In 2002 Korbel shut down the brewery and, after six years, Cilurzo lost his job.
Madagascar is the world’s fourth largest island and home to large numbers of plant and animal species found nowhere else on Earth. Try to wrap your mind around this magical locale if you can; but if you can’t, then head to Peaks & Pints Wednesday, Jan. 18 when the Drinking For Conservation zookeepers will explain what’s going down in Madagascar as you enjoy ciders on tap from 2 Towns Ciderhouse. In late 2010, Corvallis homebrewers Aaron Sarnoff-Wood and Lee Larsen filled a gap in the college town’s drinking scene — cider. The duo opened 2 Towns Ciderhouse crafting unique ciders

The early days of the American craft beer revolution — and much of consumer demand — was driven by the West Coast IPA. Introduced to the American drinking public via Sierra Nevada, Stone Brewing, Green Flash, Russian River, Ballast Point, Lagunitas, and ilk, the West Coast IPA minimizes malt richness and supersizes citrusy, resinous, and piney hops. Next came Vinnie Cilurzo — who went on to co-found Russian River Brewing and brewed the first West Coast double IPA at his Blind Pig Brewing in Temecula in 1994. He brewed Blind Pig Inaugural Ale, marking the birth of the Double IPA,
Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream,” speech at the March on Washington in August 1963 serves as the touchstone for today’s annual King holiday. He brought hope to untold people both black and white. Remembering his dream matters more than ever today as we witness, still, the openly mocking and demeaning of women, blacks, Islam, and immigrants while ignoring human rights, denying science and climate change, supporting violence and conspiracy, and taking away the health care of millions of Americans. It’s Monday, which means in addition to Martin Luther King Jr. Day, it’s Peaks and Pints weekly to-go
We know, we know, you’re thinking, “Is there really a food holiday for every day of the week?” The answer: Yes, yes there is. Today, January 15, is National Strawberry Ice Cream Day, so we’d encourage you on this 47-degree day to head to Peaks & Pints for … strawberry beer. Strawberries have become more and more popular as a flavor component in malted barley brewed beverages. Though it has been pointed out that some hop varietals impart flavor characteristics likened to strawberries, there are in fact actual brews that use the scrumptious fruit to add their own deliciousness. Stop

In September 2014, after seven years of homebrewing, writing business plans, watching Viking movies, and dialing in their branding, scientist Mark Bjornstad, builder Darin Montplaisir, businessperson Jesse Feigum, and engineer Mason Montplaisir opened Drekker Brewing Company in what was once North Dakota’s most rough and rowdy frontier town, Fargo. Originally located in a downtown space where Drumconrath Brewing now operates, Drekker moved a few blocks west into a huge brick building that once housed a locomotive repair company. After pouring concrete over the tracks, Drekker installed brew tanks, pinball machines and 24 taps to serve their inventive beers. While a
In early October 2022, Two Seattle beer scene veterans opened Bizarre Brewing with the goal of brewing lower ABV beers in a bona fide community space. Derek Brown and Colette Boilini met working at Fremont Brewing in 2014. Boilini has also served at Holy Mountain and both Cloudburst locations. Brown was the first outside brewing hire at Holy Mountain where he went on to lead their respected barrel-aged beer program. Bizarre Brewing recently opened their taproom inside the building Urban Family Brewing occupied in Seattle’s Magnolia neighborhood before moving to Ballard. Today, Peaks & Pints presents a to-go flight of
During the pandemic, Conrad Andrus left his five-year brewing job at Culmination Brewing to join head brewer Mat Sandoval at Modern Times Beer’s Belmont Fermentorium, a Portland location for the San Diego brewery. After Modern Times in Portland shutdown in February 2022, Andrus and Sandoval opened Living Haus Beer Co. in the shuttered Belmont Fermentorium with former pFriem Family Brewers’ Head Brewer Gavin Lord joining the partnership. The Living Haus trio transformed the space into a sleek, modern brewery and taproom while keeping the building’s character, which dates to the 1930s. Today, Peaks & Pints presents a to-go flight of
Whether you’re a skim, two percent, or whole milk drinker, Jan. 11 is a day to celebrate anything and everything milk. It’s National Milk Day and, of course, Peaks and Pints celebrates with a flight of milk stouts — a flight we call Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: National Milk Day Flight. Milk stouts originated in Europe in the 1800s. The style emphasizes a malty sweetness with hints of chocolate and caramel. They are sometimes called cream stouts or sweet stouts. Brewers intensified the dark, chocolaty malt body with lactose, the sugar in cow’s milk, hence why they’re more often
In December 2021, after 300 batches of homebrew, and countless building egress drawings, Nick Ladd and Jessie Quan, husband and wife, opened Ladd & Lass Brewing in Seattle’s U-District. Housed in the former Floating Bridge Brewery spot on 45th Street near Interstate 5, which was also the former Rainbow Tavern where the Ramones and Soundgarden rocked the kids, the former architects opened with a pile of beer recipes and design chops. With T-shirts, albums, and newspaper articles from the glory days of Rainbow Tavern donning the walls, Ladd & Lass brew the full spectrum of beer styles — from lagers
Ultimately, cider is a regional product, and not every part of the country has access to the best varieties of apples to make it. Even if a grower planted an orchard today, it would be at least seven years before those trees produced their first fruit. Not only are Washington and Oregon two of the country’s biggest states for beer and wine, but the Pacific Northwest is leading the way with craft ciders, too. It makes sense, especially as Washington leads the nation in apple production (6.57 billion pounds in 2020). Since it’s Monday, the day of the week when
In England, ESBs fall into a category known generically as “bitters” as ESB stands for “extra special bitter.” The English bitter workaday session brew, which is also knows as an English pale ale, has been brewed and enjoyed in the UK for centuries as an alternative to milds and IPAs. English pale ales are richly flavored, medium bodied with residual malt and defining sweetness, earthy, herbal English-variety hop character, and medium to high hop bitterness. The yeast strains used in these beers lend a fruitiness to their aromatics and flavor, referred to as esters. Today, there are three kinds that
Geoffrey Barker and Andrew Pogue met as members of the North Seattle Home Brew Club. They both love saisons and sours. They traveled to mixed-fermentation guru Jester King in Austin, Texas, where they added to their friendship circle. The duo spent years looking for a place to launch their brewery. Eventually they landed in a former home of an orchid retailer, a boxy, lightly industrial building at 936 Northwest 49th Street, in the thick of Ballard’s brewery district. With the help of Jester King, Barker and Pogue opened Fair Isle Brewing in January 2020 focusing on mixed-culture and wild beers,
6-Pack of Things To Do: January 6-8 2023 Is this the year? Is this the time you reset your intent and cut a wide swath across Tacoma? Are you ready to disavow your grudges and cleanse your spiritual colon and wave your bitchin’ flame of self around like a Bic lighter at a 1984 Journey concert? Peaks & Pints’ 6-Pack of Things To Do is here to help. TACOMA LIGHT TRAIL: The Tacoma Light Trail is exactly that: a walking or driving trail around Tacoma’s downtown to see light art. The art – which ranges from projection mapping to video,
Simcoe was introduced in 2000 by Yakima Chief Ranches as a proprietary hop varietal with strong bitter and aromatic qualities. Little has been released about its parentage, but it has been compared to Cascade. Simcoe isn’t a one-style pony; this variety can do great things in several beer styles, and is often used in conjunction with the Cascade, Centennial, Chinook, and Citra hop varieties. Although not used much as a bittering hop, many craft brewers favor Simcoe for its unique aroma profile composed of piney, woody, and grapefruit citrus notes mixed with slightly dank and spicy notes of onion and

In 2018, avid outdoor enthusiasts Abraham Ebert and Brad Wilske opened Lost Giants Cider Company in Bellingham, Washington. They named their cidery for the stately trees that once graced the forests surrounding Bellingham. The two discovered a shared passion for all things fermented while working in the local craft brewing industry. Ebert’s extensive background in fermentation science, brewing and production is now being leveraged to produce ciders that showcase the abundant agriculture of Washington state. Since it’s Monday, the day of the week Peaks & Pints suggests a to-go flight of ciders, we offer Lost Giants Cider as our first

Like many folks, you might be a slave to chemical rituals — caffeine in the morning, and booze at night. In the name of efficiency, Peaks & Pints recommends combining the two at every opportunity. The pairing of roasted barley with roasted coffee is so natural; it’s almost surprising these stouts and porters didn’t catch on sooner. But coffee beers didn’t really start to percolate until the mid-90s, and even now they are far from a staple even among craft breweries. But almost no one argues with the inspiration — porters and stouts tend to rely on a roasty malt

Let’s face it, 2022 has been a dumpster fire. We could fill an entire novel with all the tragic and unfortunate events that have proved to be a major bummer over the past 12 months, but will instead focus on turning the page, moving on, and looking forward to a brighter future. New Year’s Eve is an occasion to drink with friends (if you wanna), to dress up in your nicest duds (if you wanna), to laugh your ass off (if you wanna), and to remember all the good things that happened over the past 12 months (yes, there were
