Craft Beer Crosscut 4.8.17: A Flight of Comet

Share

Welcome back Comet. Comet hops have been around since the 1970s and are a crossbreed of British and wild American hops. At the time they were bred for higher alpha acid content, allowing for less hops to be used during the boil while retaining the same amount of bitterness. Many brewers at the time found the flavors and aromas of Comet hops objectionable. Flavor aromas such as citrus, herbal and earthy elements, and marijuana all distracted from the clean lager tastes favored at the time. These days you can hardly find an IPA without one of the adjectives listed above.

Craft Beer Crosscut 4.7.17: A Flight of Session

Share

Today is National Beer Day, but it’s also Session Beer Day. The annual pseudo-holiday was launched in 2012 by Lew Bryson, a Pennsylvania-based drinks writer who also started The Session Beer Project five years before his easy-drinking holiday. What is a session beer? Well, it depends on whom you ask. The term’s precise origins and coinage are fuzzy. Beer experts can’t seem to agree on a specific year, for instance, but consistently point to British pub culture as its inspiration. It’s generally agreed upon, however, that any brew bearing the description should be low in alcohol but tasty enough to

Tournament of Washington IPAs: Round One April 7 Welcome to the Tournament of Washington IPAs: Round One April 7. There are many paths on the road to India Pale Ale greatness, but they all start with the brewer. The brewer begins her or his life sucking from mother’s teat and grazing on applesauce. Soon enough, though, the brewer makes her or his way through school. Some attend a university’s brewing program. Others begin in different surroundings, fed diets of craft beer as interns or assistant brewers. Some brew on a TopTier system in a garage, striving to win a pro-am
