Van Havig, former brewmaster at Rock Bottom Brewery in Portland, and Ben Love, previously a brewer at Pelican Brewery and head brewer at Hopworks Urban Brewery, added to Portland’s Beervana opening Gigantic Brewing May 9, 2012. The two brewers figured out how to have two head brewers, then proceeded to make delicious beer. Their taproom had a college clubhouse vibe. They brewed amazing one-offs. Their label art, signed by the artists, could hang in museums. And they would brew with the coolest rock stars. Today, Peaks & Pints offers a flight of Gigantic beers called Peaks & Pints Gigantic Beer Flight.
Peaks & Pints Gigantic Beer Flight
Gigantic Wonder Crusher
4.2% ABV
An English mild is a classic, low-alcohol beer style with a malty, often dark flavor profile. It’s known for its moderate body and low hop bitterness, making it a sessionable, easy-drinking ale. Gigantic’s version, Wonder Crusher, adds citrus and tropical vibes, offering a wildly drinkable experience.
Gigantic Mecha Red
5.5% ABV
Mecha Red is brewed with Northwest Pale and Crystal malts, delivering a rich caramel backbone complemented by subtle fruity and citrusy hop notes. Mecha Red is like that — it’s like going back to a simpler time when caramel malt and some citrusy hops seemed like the most fantastic thing. The finish offers a hint of chocolate, making it flavorful yet not overly sweet. It’s malty and caramelly, but not a sticky caramel bomb.
Gigantic Sassy Pony
5.5% ABV
Self-described as “frisky and hop forward,” Gigantic’s Sassy Pony is hazy liquid gold in a glass. While not an official Pride beer, Sassy Pony’s vibrant caricature label is a riot of rainbow colors and ponies that make the bottle stand out right off the shelf. With a rocky pour, the nose is lively and energetic with scents of citrus oils and hops, but doesn’t assault you with the typical funk of an over-hopped pale ale. The flavor has an upfront mildness reminiscent of classic Citra and Cascade hops, but unfolds with layers of faint tropical fruits, fresh-cut grass, and even a slight farmhouse ale hay finish.
Gigantic Never Say Die
7% ABV
Gigantic teamed up with Matt Brynildson of Firestone Walker to brew Never Say Die, an outrageously hop-loaded West Coast IPA for the Portland brewery’s 13th Anniversary. Taking its name from the cult classic film, The Goonies, this new IPA brings together hand-selected Riwaka, Simcoe, Crystal, and a generous addition of Mosaic Incognito for bright tropical fruit, punchy citrus, and a subtle hint of dank diesel.
