Tournament of Beer: West Coast Flagships nominations open

In April 2020, Peaks and Pints will host the Tournament of Beer: West Coast Flagships. We’ve swept the court of last year’s pilsner tournament for West Coast brews that spawned, defined and advanced the craft beer movement, broken down by decades. Chosen through the nomination process below, the top 64 vote getters — the cream of the craft — will compete Monday-Friday on our website April 3-25. Through online voting, Washington, Oregon and California craft staple drinkers will pick daily winners until the best West Coast flagships from the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and 2010s meet in the Final Four. It’s similar to our last three beer tournaments, only with way more aging barflies participating. The go-to to go-to battle of the flagships grand champion will be announced at the Tournament of Beers Party April 25 at Peaks and Pints in Tacoma’s Proctor District. The final two flagships — one from 1980-1990 and one from the 2000s — will battle live pouring from Peaks and Pints’ Western red cedar tap log with the champion brewery receiving a permanent handle at Peaks and Pints through the spring and summer.

First, we need you to help select the 64 flagships that should be included in the tournament. Pale ales and India pale ales, porters and stouts, ambers and lagers, it’s all the same — as long as they are that one, first core beer that breweries produce year-round, generally meant to be readily available, and the brewery is recognized by someone other than the owner’s mother.

What is the best flagship beer on the West Coast? Vote for your favorite from each decade below before midnight Friday, Feb. 14. We’ll randomly select a ballot to win a $25 Peaks and Pints gift card. If it’s been a while, give one of your old favorites a try. Fall back in love, just in time for Valentine’s Day.

And look for the first round of Tournament of Beer: West Coast Flagships voting April 3 on this website.
