SATURDAY PREFUNK: Craft beer before Tacoma after parties

Share

SATURDAY, AUG. 13 2016: South Sound events + craft beer …

LANco + Brew Five Three = huge and energetic

Music and Art in Wright Park + Pacific Brewing & Malting Co. = go local

CHANT-ALONG COUNTRY

LANco, comprised of five best friends Brandon Lancaster, Tripp Howell, Eric Steedly, Jared Hampton and Chandler Baldwin, recently impacted country radio with their debut single “Love Live Tonight” which is featured on their four-song, self-titled EP produced by Jay Joyce (Eric Church, Little Big Town). The Nashville-based band preforms shout-till-you’re-hoarse kind of music, brought to life by a group with a performing style as unconventional for country music as their name (LANco is short for Lancaster & Company). Think a country version of Imagine Dragons. Check out LANco at 8 p.m. in Steel Creek country bar.

PREFUNK: For any craft beer enthusiast living in the South Sound, the last 12 months has been a stellar with major craft beer industry announcements such as the McMenamins green light at the Tacoma Elks building to 7 Seas Brewing opening a second location in Tacoma to new breweries like Matchless Brewing, Gig Harbor Brewing, Sluggo Brewing, Dunagan, North 47, Wet Coast and on and on. The Broadway Center for the Performing Arts continues to add delicious fuel to the fire with its annual Brew Five Three: Tacoma’s Beer & Blues Festival next to the Pantages Theater in downtown Tacoma, this year scheduled to consume Broadway street from 1-8 p.m. The one-day craft beer and music event features 30-plus regional breweries, blues and bluegrass bands and popular area food trucks.

MUSIC AND ART IN WRIGHT PARK

After a full day of local music at Music and Art in Wright Park (Big Wheel Stunt Show, Halcion Halo, Pig Snout, The Rusty Cleavers, Phasers On Kill, Ex-Gods and on and on) The Valley will host the official MAWP after party at 8 p.m. with headliner Hamell on Trial is the nom de la musique of Ed Hamell, solo punk poet extraordinaire, beloved among cognoscenti at the Venn-diagram intersection of folk, punk and observational standup comedy. And where there is New York-based Hamell on there is local a garage rock band Radio On.

PREUNK: There are plenty of spontaneous after-parties that crop up once the final beer is poured at Brew Five Three: Tacoma’s Beer & Blues Festival in downtown Tacoma. Some will head to King’s Books and read from the Declaration of the Rights of Man, tossing out questions about popular sovereignty and the influences of John Locke and the American Revolution. Others will bond over couple massages asking for pints of milk to soothe the sunburn on the back of their crimson thighs. Most will head to Pacific Brewing & Malting Co. to continue drinking Pierce County beers from the like of Wingman Brewers, Odd Otter Brewing, Harmon Brewing and others from 4-11 p.m. The appropriately named band Swallow will perform at 7 p.m.
