TUESDAY PREFUNK: Craft beer before Grand Cinema, Two O’Clock Courage

TUESDAY, AUG. 30 2016: South Sound events + craft beer …

The Grand Cinema + Local Boys Tap Room = The Little Mermaid and 7 Seas

Le Voyeur + Oly Taproom = emo and fizz

LIFE, ANIMATED

It’s Tuesday, which means The Grand Cinema will screen another obscure indie film worthy of your attention: Talk, Animated. Just before he turned 3, Owen Suskind stopped communicating with the world, giving up language for gibberish — in the words of his father, the reporter Ron Suskind, Owen had become “unglued.” Doctors diagnosed Owen as autistic, and his family lost communication with him for years. Then Owen discovered Disney films. And he began talking again. The documentary Life, Animated follows Owen, now an eager and talkative young man in his early 20s, feeling his way into adulthood with the support of his family — and seeking comfort and meaning in Disney. Life, Animated is rich with insight about the role our popular culture plays in child development, but it’s richer still in love. Catch it at 2 and 6:45 p.m.

PREFUNK: You can’t talk South Sound beer without mentioning 7 Seas Brewing. Founders Mike Runion and Travis Guterson opened 7 Seas Brewing in 2008, but a fire in January 2009 at the original downtown Gig Harbor address meant the two young beer makers and co-owners had to relocate. Popularity and growth forced them to move to a larger location back in downtown Gig Harbor. 7 Seas Brewing Co. now occupies the 11,000 sq. ft. former QFC grocery store with an 8,600 sq. ft. production facility and 2,400 sq. ft. taproom with long tables and outdoor seating in Gig Harbor AND an 80,000-square-foot expansive taproom, marketplace and production facility with 10,000 sq. ft. basement for barrel program in downtown Tacoma at a site that once held part of the Heidelberg Brewery. It’s hard to find a bar in the South Sound without a tap of its flagship (puns!) beer Rude Parrot — a crisp, grapefruit, orange and pine IPA that’s as quaffable as it is sturdy. From 2 p.m. until close, Local Boys Tap Room next to the Purdy Bridge will host 7 Seas staff and its brews 253 Pilsner, Export Stout, Rude Parrot IPA, the very limited American Style Hefeweizen and Ballz Deep Double IPA. Former Swiss Pub co-founder and local resident Bob Hill will guest bartend.

TWO O’CLOCK COURAGE

If you’re older than 30, it’s time to face it: The ’90s and even early 2000s, are like, totally retro, and maybe, just maybe, they are cooler now than they were then … you know, like yacht rock. Oh, but to wear your heart on your (script-tattooed) sleeve and maybe even dig out that old chain wallet would be rad. LA emo band Two O’Clock Courage will rock downtown Olympia club Le Voyeur at 6:30 p.m.

PREFUNK: Might your idea of a summer sipper be expansive enough to include a beer float? Because if you are open-minded about these things, it can be mind-blowing, a marriage of cold creaminess and explosive fizz, innocent sweetness and a blast of pungent, hoppy bitterness. As served at Oly Taproom, most famous for its craft beer on tap and pizza, the beer float takes a twist. The downtown Olympia bottle shop and taproom will create beer floats with High Water Campfire Stout and Not Your Fathers Root Beer from 6-9 p.m. They’ll also have live music courtesy of Olympia trumpet player Andy Omdahl and guitarist Tarik Bentlemsani.
