Share

TUESDAY, DEC. 6 2016: South Sound events + craft beer …

The Grand Cinema + Peaks and Pints = 45% Boulevard’s Bourbon Barrel Quad, 35% Firestone Walker Stickee Monkee, 10% Boulevard Imperial Stout X – Tart Cherry (whiskey barrel-aged), 10% Firestone Walker Velvet Merkin and 100% punk rock

Old Town chamber music series + 7 Seas Brewing = classical and chocolate

PUNK DOCUMENTARY

Never commercially successful — and a careening mess of dysfunction during their brief run — The Stooges, fronted by Iggy Pop, nonetheless made a serious dent in rock ’n’ roll. See for yourself in Jim Jarmusch’s new documentary charting the history of the band from its formation in late-1960s Michigan through some nominal success and the break-up in 1974. Gimme Danger delivers a big, sloppy love letter to the legendary punk band. Check out the rollicking documentary celebrating what Jarmusch dubs “the greatest rock and roll band ever” at 1:45 and 7:50 p.m. in The Grand Cinema.

PREFUNK: Collaborations have gained lots of traction in the world of craft beer — Denver Beer Co. joined with D.C. Brau for what they called “an exploratory ale” named Peanut Butter Lunchbox, Boulder Beer and Fat Head’s collaborated on a hoppy Hefeweizen appropriately dubbed Co-Hopitation, Three Magnets Brewing and Triceratops Brewing brewed Big Dumb Face Double IPA. Things are no different in Kansas City, where Boulevard Brewing Company invited California-based brewery Firestone Walker to 2501 Southwest Boulevard to collaborate on the Collaboration No. 6 Barrel Aged Blend, and by blend we’re talking a blend of two Boulevard and two Firestone Walker beers. At 45% of the blend, Boulevard’s Bourbon Barrel Quad makes up the largest portion of the beer, followed by Firestone Walker Stickee Monkee at an additional 35%. The last 20% consists of Boulevard Imperial Stout X – Tart Cherry (whiskey barrel-aged), and Firestone Walker Velvet Merkin at 10% each. Peaks and Pints has Collaboration No. 6 Barrel Aged Blend in our cooler.

WINE AND SONG

This year’s Classical Tuesdays Wine & Song Benefit in Old Town Tacoma will focus on “Songs of Love & Longing.” It will also — more importantly — feature soprano Janeanne Houston and tenor Jim Brown accompanied by pianist Oksana Ezhokina — doling out tunes by Mozart, Beethoven, Faure, Duparc and others. This annual event benefits the free Classical Tuesdays in Old Town chamber music series. Enjoy love and longing at 7 p.m. in the Connelly Law Offices in Old Town Tacoma. Twenty-five dollars scores a reception of finger foods and wines by Ginkgo Forest Winery, as well as love and longing.

PREFUNK: Hershey’s? Forget about it. Belgian chocolates? Nope, too fatty due to an overabundance of cocoa butter, which apparently Belgian’s have a taste for. Think Godiva is the cat’s meow? You obviously haven’t heard of 7 Seas Brewing’s Mexican Hot Chocolate Imperial Stout. Don’t get us wrong, a box o’ chocolates from Godiva is perfectly yummy. And our favorite chocolate comes in the form of a Mounds bar. But experiencing chocolate with oats, de-husked black malt, chocolate malt, vanilla beans, along with a touch of cinnamon stick and dried cayenne chili peppers is 9% ABV delicious. Mexican Hot Chocolate Imperial Stout hits the nose vanilla and malted milk chocolate followed by a soft and sweet roasted character. Faint hints of cinnamon and cayenne scarcely tickle the palette as the velvety and warming stout coats the mouth. You in? Drop by 7 Seas’ taprooms in Gig Harbor and Tacoma beginning at 11 a.m. for a pint or two.
