MONDAY, DEC. 5 2016: South Sound events + craft beer and cider …

The Blue Mouse Theatre + Peaks and Pints = Double Mountain and Seven Magnificent cowboys

Tacoma Musical Playhouse + Silver City Brewery = Taste of Christmas

MAGNIFICENT SEVEN AGAIN

The Blue Mouse Theatre screens Magnificent Seven at 7 p.m. starring Denzel Washington. There are plenty of people young and old who realize this is a remake of the original Magnificent Seven, which was in turn an adaptation of Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai. The basic plot remains the same, with a desperate town turning to a septet of ne’er-do-wells for protection. This time, the cast of reprobates includes Washington, Vincent D’Onofrio and Ethan Hawke and a wide-ranging arsenal of weapons and some funny lines. Cinematographer Mauro Fiore makes ample use of New Mexico’s mountains and buttes in his widescreen frames, and a score by Simon Franglen and James Horner rumbles ominously, like thunder on the plains.

PREFUNK: Double Mountain Brewery has long toyed with releasing their own hard cider, occasionally featuring housemade cider on at the taproom made from owner Matt Swihart’s own apples. The Oregon Hood River Gorge-based brewery finally releases it sown Dry Cider (6.7% ABV) blending freshly harvested heirloom apples from Double Mountain Orchards and Hood River Newtowns, Braeburns, and Hanners for old world complexity. Double Mountain gave it plenty of time to dry out and develop the aromas of juicy pear, lychee, green fruit, and chamomile.  It finishes tart, crisp, dry and quenching. Peaks and Pints will host Double Mountain owner Matt Swihart and the South Sound release party for Dry Cider at 6 p.m. In addition, Double Mountain Imperio Stout (nitro) will pour for the first time in Washington state, right from the Peaks and Pints’ Western red cedar tap log. Also on draft will be Double Mountain’s Devil’s Kriek Lambic and Fa La La La La Winter Ale. Swihart and the Double Mountain Brewery crew will raffle off their goods, too.

BIG BAND CHRISTMAS

We all have touchstones that bring the simple spirit of Christmas to our harried, mall-besotted souls. For some, it’s that first burst of multi-colored light when the last string is strung. For others, it could be a long-treasured card or the smell of baking cookies. For Peaks and Pints, it’s the music. The 18-piece big band Swing Reunion Orchestra will perform traditional standards and Christmas music from Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Chick Webb, Count Basie, Les Brown, and all the other stars of swing music. SRO vocalist Melanie Vail and master of ceremony Paige Hansen join the 7:30 p.m. show at Tacoma Musical Playhouse.

PREFUNK: On this day in history: 1933, Prohibition ends. On this day in history: 2016, Silver City Brewery hosts an Old Scrooge Vertical Tasting. Celebrating an English-style barleywine that benefits immensely from extended aging, this particular event provides craft beer lovers the opportunity to try past vintages of Old Scrooge that have been aged in perfect cellar conditions in the Brewmaster’s private library. Several varieties of Old Scrooge will be available for sampling, including barrel-aged variants, as well as a few other rare beers from the Brewmaster’s collection, from 6-8 p.m.
