TACOMA PREFUNK SATURDAY, SEPT. 23 2017: 7 Seas Autumn Ale and Pacific Brewing party

PREFUNK: Peaks and Pints continues its month-long autumn beer party marrying up two popular seasonal beers — fresh hops and Oktoberfest. We’re calling it The Hunt For Fresh Hoptoberfest, tapping fresh hop and Oktoberfest beers daily through Sept. 31. You’ll find bright, hop-hazy fresh-hop beers, just hours from field to kettle and mere days from the fermenter to your glass AND drink to your health clean, hearty Oktoberfest-style lagers from Germany and nearby. We’ll wager our pretzel bread sticks you’ll drink both. Our Oktoberfest beers today includes 7 Seas Brewing’s annual Autumn Ale. 7 Seas Head Brewer Travis Guterson calls his September beer Autumn Ale to eliminate confusion with harvest ales being associated with fresh hops. Guterson keeps the fermentation temperature between 61 and 62 degrees to inhibit fruity esters, allowing crisp malt flavors to fully emerge. German Hersbrucker and Czech Saaz hops contribute a moderately spicy, earthy flavor accent to this otherwise malty and smooth brew.

1 P.M. UNTIL CLOSE PACIFIC BREWING & MALTING CO. THIRD ANNIVERSARY PARTY: In 1897, The Milwaukee Brewing Company in Tacoma gave a warranty deed to the Puget Sound Brewing Company for its brewery and all property connected therewith for a consideration named in the deed of $1, and the Pacific Brewing & Malting Company filed articles of incorporation, with a capital stock of $500,000 to carry on the business of the two breweries. The trustees of the new company were William Virges of the Bonney Drug Company, treasurer; Anton Huth, president of the Puget Sound Brewing Company, president; S.S. Loeb, president of the Milwaukee Brewing Company, secretary. Pacific Brewing & Malting Co. grew to become the second largest brewery in Washington state, until shut down by Prohibition in 1916. In 2014, Head brewer Steve Navarro, financial businessman Brent Hall and investors reopen Pacific Brewing and Malting Co., not in its original location in Tacoma’s Brewery District near 25th and Jefferson, but rather down the street in the lower level of the historic Old City Hall Annex Building on Pacific Avenue, near the corner of South Seventh Street. Today, Pacific Brewing and Malting Co. celebrates three years since it reopened with special beer releases such as Oktoberfest, German IPA and Berliner Weisse, as well as collectible steins and shirts, music by Bryson Foster Band and Brew Dog tastiness.

11 P.M. THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2: The first of what would eventually become a string of sequels, remakes and reboots of remakes, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 is by far the most entertaining follow-up to the 1974 horror classic. Original director Tobe Hooper guides a satirical screenplay by art-house favorite L.M. Kit Carson (Breathless; Paris, Texas) that sees Leatherface and his cannibalistic clan terrorizing a female disc jockey while a Texas lawman (Dennis Hopper, fresh off of Blue Velvet) seeks vengeance for the death of his kin. Funny, gory, and completely over-the-top, The Grand Cinema screens the film at 11 p.m. as part of its Weird Elephant series, which pairs bizarre, spine-chilling, fantastic or just plain mind-blowing films with trivia and craft beer.
