TACOMA PREFUNK OCT. 3 2017: Whipsaw Stump Blower IPA and Creative Colloquy Crawl

PREFUNK: In spring 2016, Charley and Debbie Tierney opened Whipsaw Brewing in Ellensburg. The brewery’s name stemmed from Charley’s years in the logging industry as well as the Tierney’s business philosophy: “It takes two people to successfully operate a whipsaw.” The taproom embraces the logging theme with saws and more saws, lumber and animal tracks on the floor. Whipsaw’s Stump Blower IPA caresses the nose with soft citrus hops. The flavor is more citrus constant, with a smooth, clean finish. Hang onto summer with Stump Blower IPA pouring appropriately from Peaks and Pints’ Western red cedar tap log.

2 AND 6:30 P.M. MARIE CURIE: THE COURAGE OF KNOWLEDGE: During her lifetime, Marie Curie was seen as an anomaly, not a pioneer. Writer-director Marie Nöelle (The Anarchist’s Wife) and co-screenwriter Andrea Stoll capture this in their fragmentary biopic Marie Curie: The Courage of Knowledge set between 1905 and ’11, when Curie’s legacy was far from assured despite her major achievements. Discover Madame Curie — an outsider, born Maria Sklodowska in Poland (her nickname was Mania), and held progressive beliefs that put her at odds with Parisian society — at The Grand Cinema today.

6-9 P.M. CREATIVE COLLOQUY CRAWL: Tacoma will be saturated with verse tonight. The Creative Colloquy Crawl will pepper our metropolis with stories big and small, and some promise to be pretty damn colorful, with a delicious craft beer nearby. The literary pub crawl makes perfect sense — prose and booze have long been lovers. Writers such as Truman Capote and Jack Kerouac would agree if they hadn’t died from — among other things — cirrhosis. The Crawl launches at 6 p.m. at with storytellers and such at The Mix, Union Club, Harmon Taproom, Artists and Craftsman Supply and King’s Books. At 7 p.m., Union Club, Black Kettle Bites and Brew, King’s Books, The Mix and Doyle’s Public House corral the wordsmiths. At 8 p.m., Doyle’s, King’s Books, Union Club, Harmon Taproom and Black kettle host the final round of Creative Colloquy folks. For full details on storytellers, music and art held at each venue, visit facebook.com/CreativeColloquy.
