Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Prairie On The Fly

Share

After sharing their different and experimental variations of saisons working as gypsy brewers, brothers Chase and Colin Healey decided it was time to have a brewery of their own. They raised more than $20,000 on Kickstarter with the help of fans and formed Prairie Artisan Ales in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 2012. Chase Healey grabbed the brewhouse while his brother is the talent behind the fun, funky branding, and logo design. Together, they brought a unique perspective to brewing — especially big bold barrel aged stouts and super crisp and funky farmhouse ales. Today, Peaks & Pints presents a to-go flight of Prairie Artisan Ales beers — a flight we’re calling Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Prairie On The Fly.

Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Prairie On The Fly

Prairie Thai Delight

5.1% ABV

This mango sticky rice inspired sour ale is brewed with mango, flaked rice, and coconut cream. The aroma is pleasant, tangy like lemon from the lactic souring, which serves to accent the mango. The coconut is more apparent on the nose. The flavor follows the nose with the coconut similar to Thai coconut cream from the can, plus light citrus and sweet mango. The body is thick and starchy from the rice. It’s not overly sweet like many Prairie sours.

Prairie Pink Guava Funk

6.3% ABV

The wild yeast Brettanomyces is a regular contributor to many wild ales’ flavor profiles, but on its own, it imparts no sourness. Even so, due to Brett’s appearance in sour beers, the under-informed beer drinker has been known to complain that a 100 percent Brett beer isn’t even sour. When people look for sour, even in places where it shouldn’t be, they want it capital-S sour, which is the case with Prairie’s Pink Guava Funk kettle sour with Brett and pink guava. It hits the nose with guava, funk, passionfruit, and sour fruit. The taste is tart and sweet with notes of sour fruit, guava, passionfruit, and lime.

Prairie Seasick Crocodile

6.3% ABV

Prairie’s Seasick Crocodile is a sour ale brewed with cranberries, ginger, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Nutmeg rules the nose, but we also smell the cinnamon and ginger. It’s not overpoweringly sour. Expect balanced spice notes and sweet berry flavors, with the ginger arriving in the aftertaste. It’s light-bodied and moderately carbonated with a medium-dry finish.

Prairie Barrel Aged Moose Boots

13.4% ABV

After you get past the moose wearing a suit and work boots listening to music, a breakdancer, spray can, a pigeon sitting on a cone, and a money sign gold chain on the label, this barrel-aged imperial stout brewed with maple syrup, toasted almonds, and vanilla hits the nose with roasted malt and a little oak bourbon. On the tongue, expect chocolate fudge maple syrup brownie with a touch of oak.

Prairie Phantasmagoria

8% ABV

Phantasmagoria was a form of horror theater that used one or more magic lanterns to project frightening images such as skeletons, demons, and ghosts onto walls, smoke, or semi-transparent screens, typically using rear projection to keep the lantern out of sight. Prairie’s Phantasmagoria is an IPA that is low in malt flavors, but high in hops. Prairie uses loads of citrusy and piney hops at the end of the boil and in the fermenter to make this beer a hop experience.
