Peaks and Pints Instagram Outsider June 15-21 2020

Hello, Peaks and Pints Pals! We made it to the summer solstice, although it feels like we packed two years into four months. This past week we heard the sad news of Pike Brewing’s Rose Ann Finkel’s passing, breweries launching Phase 2 operations, and all the masks. Be sure to keep tagging us @peaksandpints for your chance to be featured. Until we meet back here again next week, cheers to you!

Jordan Smith, owner of @cascadiapublichouse on the right, and Chef Avont Grant, of No-Li Brewhouse on the left. These two teamed up to show gratitude & celebrate Juneteenth!⠀ ⠀ A few words from our Chef Avont: ⠀ ⠀ •What is Juneteenth? ⠀ ⠀ “A reminder of our past! Juneteenth is a celebration of things to come and our freedom from slavery!”⠀ ⠀ “Juneteenth is our “Independence Day”… A day to recognize the end of slavery…”⠀ ⠀ •How is Juneteenth celebrated? ⠀ ⠀ “Juneteenth is celebrated with food, friends and community. As a kid in Southside Chicago, I remember the celebrations that took place… Juneteenth was as big as the 4th of July, but only celebrated in the black neighborhoods with Church cookouts, Block Parties, weekend Festivals and lots of backyard BBQs!”⠀ ⠀ •Why Celebrate Juneteenth?⠀ ⠀ Juneteenth, “a day of gratitude for the many who fought and paved the way for our generation, a day of celebration for the successes of our people, but also one of reflection. It’s a reminder of all the work that is still needed to be done for our future.”⠀

From Red, White & BOOM! to Liberty & Justice For All! After much reflection and discussion, we have decided that our annually released Red, White & BOOM! IPA needed an update to better reflect the times we are in. When we first decided to brew the beer again, it was back in April, in the midst of pandemic uncertainty. At the time, it felt like a good plan to bring back this celebratory and slightly tongue-in-cheek “Independent Patriotic Ale,” as we looked forward to summer celebration bringing needed cheer to the heaviness of life lived in a pandemic. Since then, things have dramatically changed in our nation. Though racial injustice has plagued America from its inception, many Americans are being re-awakened to the fact that oppression remains a daily experience for tens of millions of our brothers and sisters of color. At Block 15, we’ve also realized that a beer so enthusiastically celebrating our independence ignores the fact that freedom and justice has yet to be realized by so many people in our nation. Those of us privileged to be able to celebrate our own freedoms this July must do so while actively standing with those who are still fighting for a chance to live their own American Dream. Each year we will use this new program to both discuss and practically contribute to efforts to bring Liberty and Justice for All—especially to those marginalized by the color of their skin. This year we will be donating a portion of the proceeds from this beer to ColorOfChange.org as they work to end practices that unfairly hold Black people back while promoting solutions that move us all forward. Finally, we think it’s fitting to announce this new program on Juneteenth. ✊?✊?✊?✊?✊? On this day, we celebrate the ending of slavery in the United States, and at least the beginning of true independence for those Americans that suffered under it. In future years, our plan will be to release Liberty and Justice for All IPA to market on Juneteenth, with distribution extending through the 4th of July. For this year, we will be offering cans in-house starting Saturday, June 27, with distribution to follow in the weeks after. Peace, Love, and #JusticeForAll! – Block 15

@vebrewing x @jealousbutcher x @cascaderecordpressing = The first edition of the “45 Series.” No, this doesn’t have anything to do with the 45th president. 45 barrels of beer, 45 degree angles, and 45 RPM. This series explores two 45 barrel batches of lager/Pilsner and is released, like a record as two different sides. Side A is a traditional German Style Pilsner and Side B is a tastefully dry-hopped Pilsner. Check out Side A of the beer this Saturday 6/20, Side B on 6/27 and the 7” (local/Portland). The record will be released in early July with recordings from @califone_timrutili covering John Prine and new recordings from Astoria’s @thehacklesmusic and Portland’s @goldenpromiseband in collaboration with Jealous Butcher Records. We are SUPER excited about this project. You? #the45series #pilsner #beercollab
