Hair of the Dog: Fab Five Fred Live

Join us at Peaks & Pints Thursday, Feb. 27 as we welcome Hair of the Dog Brewing owner/brewmaster Alan Sprints and his craft beers to Tacoma. On this date, we will pour his famous Fred strong ale and its four variants from our Western red cedar tap log, plus draft pours of his Adam old ale, Doggie Claw barleywine and Polka Dot IPA. It’s a mini FredFest that we’re calling Hair of the Dog: Fab Five Fred Live.

It is a testament to Fred Eckhardt’s greatness that the real, annual Hair of the Dog FredFest keeps happening, year after year, with a rare assortment of hand-selected beers and tens of thousands of dollars raised for select nonprofits. The Portland beer writer, columnist, historian and icon, fondly known as the Dean of American Beer Writers, passed away Aug. 10, 2015, at age 89, nine years after a surprise party for his 80th birthday launched FredFest at Hair of the Dog Brewing.

Eckhardt’s book, A Treatise on Lager Beers, published in 1969, was the first modern book about beer. During his stint as the Oregonian’s first beer columnist he penned The Essentials of Beer Style, helping many homebrewers understand their craft and in turn helped launch many craft brewing careers, including Hair of the Dog Brewery’s Sprints, who created an American Strong Ale simply named Fred. Fred, the beer, is a deep golden color. It is made with aromatic and rye malts and includes 10 different hop varieties — Northern Brewer, Progress, First Gold, Crystal, Fuggle, Willamette, Tettnang, Chinook, Spalt, Saaz and Strisselspalt for caramel, bitter hops and some alcohol.

People have been making pilgrimages to Portland, Oregon for Sprints’ beer since the dark ages — back when hazy and sour beers weren’t made that way intentionally. His Hair of The Dog Brewing is proud to be one of the first breweries in America specializing in the production of high-alcohol, bottle-conditioned beers as well as experimenting with the barrel aging process since 1994.

During Hair of the Dog: Fab Five Fred Live we’ll pour Fred, Maple Fred, Fred from the Wood, Peach Fred and Fred with Skagit Valley malt, plus Adam old ale, Doggie Claws barleywine and Polka Dot IPA.

It’s going to be fabulous!
