Washington Trails & Taps Weekly Recap: July 21–27, 2025

July barreled forward with bluebird skies and dry afternoons—and the wildfire threat in the background pulsed like a warning drum. Perfect weather coaxed crowds into the wilds: ridgelines glowed; glaciers glinted; trailheads overflowed. But the narrative this week was shifted by fire closures and increasing air quality concerns. Here’s what owners of trail‑dusty boots relay, and what the ranger beat is telling us.

🌿 WTA Trip Report Highlights

  • Gothic Basin (North Cascades)
Hiked July 21. Wildflowers ablaze, snow‑free trail, minor blowdowns easily manageable. No bugs reported, and the trailhead had plenty of parking.
  • Hoh River Trail to Blue Glacier – Mount Olympus
Started July 21. Multi-night journey with mixed conditions: vibrant berries, occasional bugs, and intermittent snowfields. Glacier visibility peaked on July 25.

🛡️ Park & Ranger Updates

  • The Gifford Pinchot National Forest has implemented fire restrictions, effective July 17, which ban campfires and smoking through November 30, 2025.

🌳 Regional Burn Bans & Alerts

  • Washington State Parks posted multiple Level 3 burn bans between July 14–25: Bogachiel, Bridgeport, Illahee, Deception Pass, Clark Island, Doe Island, and more — all propane-only zones.
  • Dash Point State Park is under Level 2 restrictions as of July 21, limiting wood fires to designated pits.

🔥 Wildfire Watch

  • Carlton Complex Fire surged across Okanogan County, burning toward Brewster and Pateros. By July 26, crews had achieved roughly 60% containment, thanks in part to cooler weather.
  • Swawilla Fire ignited on July 17, prompting road closures around Mica Peak and ferry access disruption near Keller Ferry by July 21.

🚓 Ranger & Trail Patrol Notes

  • Olympic and Rainier parks report overcrowded lots at sunrise; expect tighter parking enforcement.
  • Drone use remains prohibited in all Washington parks—citations issued for violations.

🔔 Notes for Hikers

  • 🐻 Bear Activity: Sightings reported in Gothic Basin and around Blue Glacier—carry bear spray and secure food properly.
  • 🔥 Fire Safety: Level 3 and 2 bans in effect—propane stoves only, no open flames.
  • 🥾 Trail Conditions: Avalanche debris cleared from Gothic Basin; temporary detours flagged near Mt. Rainier.
  • 💧 Air Quality: Smoke from regional fires may impact breathing and visibility—check alerts before heading out.

🍻 Campfire Crowler Pairing of the Week

Deep Draft Brewing – Klaxon CDA
A brooding beauty that bellows from the glass like a foghorn through fir trees—Klaxon CDA is Deep Draft’s ode to roasted malt and pine-punched hop bitterness. Dark as a Rainier nightfall yet brightly balanced, this Cascadian Dark Ale brings chocolatey depth and resinous bite to your post-hike pint. Best enjoyed while staring down a ridge you just conquered—or wish you had.
