The Daily Outside: Military Mountain, Bird Walk, Tacoma Runners … 3.12.26
Thursday spreads the Daily Outside across the whole regional map — snowy Cascades ridgelines, tidal marsh boardwalks, a civic room where tree plans quietly take root, and finally a small herd of runners chasing the longer daylight through Tacoma streets. One moment you’re scanning cattails for the flash of a red-winged blackbird, the next you’re watching chairlifts drift above Crystal Mountain, and by evening the sidewalks fill with that familiar Northwest ritual: a few easy miles before dark. Around here the outdoors isn’t one destination. It’s a series of invitations.
Snow, gratitude, and a mountain day built for those who’ve served
Appreciation Day
Hosted by Crystal Mountain Resort × Mission Outdoors
Thursday, March 12, 2026 •Military All day
33914 Crystal Mountain Blvd, Enumclaw, WA
50% off lift tickets for veterans, active military, and dependents with valid military ID
Sometimes the Daily Outside climbs higher than a city park or neighborhood trail. Sometimes it rides a chairlift straight into the Cascades.
Crystal Mountain’s Military Appreciation Day is a mountain-wide thank-you to veterans, active military personnel, and their families — a full winter outing wrapped in community and alpine air. The centerpiece is a 50 percent lift ticket discount for military members and their dependents, redeemable at Guest Services with a valid military ID.
The morning begins at the Gondola Plaza with coffee and hot cocoa, alongside the crew from Mission Outdoors, a nonprofit that connects military communities with outdoor experiences. Think warm drinks, easy introductions, and a moment to look around and remember how good mountains can be.
Across the resort, a treasure hunt unfolds. American flags are tucked around the slopes; find one and bring it to the Mission Outdoors tent between noon and 2:30 p.m. for a prize and a small flash of bragging rights.
Between the hunt, the views, and the simple joy of moving through cold mountain air, Crystal does what it does best: turning a Thursday into a proper alpine day.

Theler Wetlands Bird Walk
Tahoma Bird Alliance • Led by John Riegsecker and Faye Hands
Thursday, March 12, 2026 • 8–11 a.m.
Theler Wetlands parking lot, 22641 WA-3, Belfair
Free • Rain or shine • All skill levels welcome
This one trades city noise for boardwalk hush. Theler Wetlands blends estuary water with wooded edges, creating that magical “edge habitat” birders love — the sort of place where the species list keeps growing while the coffee thermos slowly empties.
John Riegsecker and Faye Hands guide the walk along level trails and boardwalks where marsh birds, songbirds, and the occasional surprise appear in the reeds and branches. The official window runs 8 to 11 a.m., though the organizers admit the outing can drift toward noon when things get “extra birdy,” which is both scientifically vague and completely accurate.
Boardwalks can be slick, so this is less fashion stroll and more sturdy-shoes diplomacy. A vault toilet is available, though high tides occasionally win that argument.
What to know before you go
• Meets the second and fourth Thursday of the month
• No preregistration required
• Mostly level trails with potentially slippery boardwalks
• Vault toilet sometimes unavailable during high tide

Trees, trails, and the quiet civic work of keeping a small city leafy
Forestry & Parks Commission
Hosted by the City of Sumner
Thursday, March 12, 2026 • 4:30 p.m.
Sumner City Hall — First Floor Conference Room
1104 Maple Street, Sumner, WA
Free • Public meeting • Virtual option available
Sometimes the Daily Outside begins long before anyone laces up boots. It begins in a meeting room where neighbors quietly debate trees, trails, and how a city stays green.
Sumner’s Forestry & Parks Commission advises the city on parks, recreation spaces, trails, cemetery grounds, and the humble planting strips where street trees live their urban lives. The group also helps guide the city’s Urban Forestry Strategy and maintain its Tree City USA designation.
Commissioners serve four-year terms, most of them Sumner residents volunteering time and attention to the long view — the slow, patient work of keeping canopy and parkland healthy as the city grows.
What to know before you go
• Meeting begins at 4:30 p.m.
• Held at Sumner City Hall, First Floor Conference Room
• Open to the public
• Virtual attendance available through the agenda link

Longer daylight, neighborhood miles, and the small miracle of convincing your body it’s actually 6:30
Tacoma Runners Thursday Run
Hosted by Tacoma Runners
Thursday, March 12, 2026 • 6:30 p.m.
State Street Beer Co.
Free • 3-mile community run • All paces welcome
Daylight Saving Time returns and suddenly Tacoma receives a bonus hour of evening light — just enough to squeeze in a few miles before dark.
The weekly Tacoma Runners Thursday run gathers outside State Street Beer Co. for a relaxed three-mile loop through nearby neighborhoods. No timing chips. No finish-line tape. Just motion, conversation, and that easy rhythm that turns strangers into familiar faces somewhere around mile two.
Some runners push the pace. Others drift along at conversational jog speed. A few adopt the scenic shuffle that makes the run feel like a traveling porch conversation. However you move, the group eventually loops back to State Street.
New participants just need to complete the club’s one-time waiver before their first run. After that the formula is beautifully simple: show up, run three miles, enjoy the evening.
What to know before you go
• Run begins at 6:30 p.m.
• Approximately 3 miles
• Free community event
• All ages and paces welcome
