TACOMA PREFUNK THURSDAY, OCT. 12 2017: Bainbridge Island Brewing Cornhole Tournament and Tacoma Film Festival

PREFUNK: They will lob them high and lob them low. Sometimes they will slide in with much excitement and cheer. Sometimes — oftentimes — they will slide off with a thud and a groan from the lobber. Bainbridge Island Brewing Co. will host Cornhole Island at Peaks and Pints bottle shop, taproom and restaurant at 6 p.m. It will be flying competitive chaos that night during the cornhole tournament with five Bainbridge Island craft beers on tap, including Fresh Hop IPA, Old Toe Jam Barleywine and special mole stout. The cornhole premise is simple: Toss a beanbag, er, cornbag at a board with a hole in it. Land on the board, you get one point. Land in the hole, you get three. Four tosses each turn, per player, or team of two, and first one to 21 wins. Players are also able to cancel out their opponent’s points. If one player gets a bag in the hole for three points but his opponent tosses two bags on the board, the first player only scores one point. It’s quintessential beer-drinking fun, but with Bainbridge Island Brewing’s Kenny The Beerman running the show you know it’s going to be extra corny.

5-8 P.M. HOPS AGAINST HUNGER: In 2016, the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation’s Social Capital CAB turned its focus to the issue of food security in the Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula community. The Foundation’s Community Harvest is a collaborative community-wide initiative to get every business, school, organization and person involved, over the course of the year, in helping to meet the nutritional needs of families in need across the two peninsulas. Gig Harbor’s Wet Coast Brewing joins the effort hosting Hops against Hunger from 5-8 p.m. For every pint purchase $1 will go toward securing crockpot meals for families in need.

7:30 P.M. TACOMA FILM FESTIVAL CLOSING NIGHT: An official selection of 2017 SXSW Film Festival, the Western coming-of-age story The Ballad of Lefty Brown closes the Tacoma Film Festival 2017 at The Grand Cinema. Afterward, The Grand will announce this year’s Audience Choice winners at an after party with refreshments, a no host bar, music from Landmark DJ and professional photographs.
