TACOMA PREFUNK THURSDAY, AUG. 17 2017: Cascade Elderberry and John Wolf

PREFUNK: Being the pioneer of the Pacific Northwest-style sour movement since 2006, Cascade Brewing Barrel House produces some of the world’s best sour beers. Almost every batch enjoys at least a year in one of the brewery’s many French oak, wine or bourbon casks alongside an abundance of spices and fruits that might include, but are not limited to, apricots, cherries, elderberries, strawberries, cassis … the list goes on. Cascade’s Elderberry NW Sour Ale awaits in Peaks and Pints’ cooler. Aged six months in French oak wine barrels, then additionally aged on elderberries, this live barrel Northwest style sour red ale is a sipper, with the medium carbonation and dryness creating a champagne-like mouthfeel that adds to the lactobacillus’s tangy bite. Living up to Cascade’s fixation on the little intricacies, sweet boozy port notes and oak complement the beer’s namesake fruit along with some char notes.

5 P.M. TILTED TREE NIGHT: The North End Social Club host Tacoma’s Tilted Tree Cider and its three new ciders — Oak aged Vanilla, Lavender Honey and Lemongrass Ginger.

8 P.M. SHOTGUN KITCHEN: An almost too obvious entry point for the kind of satirical Americana of local band Shotgun Kitchen would be their spiritual forefather, John Prine. Expect stories about white-trash-living and country-road-dying performed with appealingly outlaw country-ish instrumentation and vocals at The Valley tonight. Tom Bennett, the full-time traveling one-man band from Georgia, will also be in the house/

8 P.M. JOSH WOLF: Josh Wolf is best known for his appearances as a panelist on the hit show Chelsea Lately. He stars in The Josh Wolf Show on CMT, which made history as the first late night talk show on the channel. Catch the comedian, actor and writer at the Tacoma Comedy Club.
