TACOMA PREFUNK FEB. 12 2018: Ballast Point High West Barrel-Aged Victory at Sea and Phantom Thread

PREFUNK: When it comes to imperial stouts and porters, you are going to be hard-pressed to find a beer that can go toe-to-toe with Victory at Sea Imperial Porter with Coffee & Vanilla in a blind tasting. This beer is a true standout in its original form, but Ballast Point has decided to step things up a bit this year by creating an incredibly special, barrel-aged version that has been simply named High West Barrel-Aged Victory at Sea. The brewers at Ballast Point took their classic Victory at Sea Imperial Porter  —  already infused with cold-steeped coffee and vanilla  —  and aged it carefully in bourbon and rye whiskey oak casks sourced from High West Distillery. Once the aging process was completed, the various barrels that housed the beer were then blended “to create new layers of complexity” and impart “notes of soft caramel and smoky oak over a rich dark chocolate and roasted almond body,” according to High West Barrel-Aged Victory at Sea hype. The 12% ABV porter pours from Peaks and Pints’ Western red cedar tap log.

NOON, 2:45, 5:35 AND 8:25 P.M. PHANTOM THREAD: What is fashion? We’re talking about high fashion here — as Paul Thomas Anderson is in Phantom Thread — not the everyday ideas about, say, what sort of sneaker is cool at the moment, but the world of haute couture, of catwalks, of rail-thin models who serve as hangers for the clothing they wear. Is it art? Is it power? Is it manipulation? Is it abandon? Is it control? It’s all of those things in the film Phantom Thread starring Daniel Day-Lewis, screening at The Grand Cinema.

5 P.M. PARKWAY RANDALL: It’s Monday, which means Parkway Tavern‘s master mixologist Sean Jackson selects a craft beer to run through his one-of-a-kind Randall full of fresh ingredients. If you fill up the Parkway’s Randall Wrecker Punch Card, a commemorative shirt is your reward. Tonight, Lagunitas’ Imperial Stout receives the Jackson treatment.
