SUNDAY, JULY 10 2016: South Sound events + craft beer …

Art on the Ave + Pint Defiance = Sunday Sampler
Rhythm & Rye + Three Magnets Brewing = Funk Sunday

ART ON THE AVE

Tacoma’s Art on the Ave really underscores how, at our cores, we are really just animals on the hunt for our next place of gratification for all our cravings, hungers (hand-held cuisine from restaurants), hobbies (street art team Game Not Fame, 100th Monkey, Goodwill Challenge, 150 vendors), thrills (inflatables, palm readings), and addictions (yes, drinking in the sun can be considered an addiction when half the year is spent in pissy weather). And like most simple creatures, no matter what degree of civilized they may be, when we hear great music, we can lose our cool, which we’ll lose many times in front of Vicci Matinez, Ben Union, Stay Grounded, Big Wheel Stunt Show, Pig Snout, Strangely Alright, Mirrorgloss, Q Dot, Deathbed Confessions, to name a few. Festivities will go from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; it’s free and open to all ages along Tacoma’s Sixth Avenue from State to Alder.
PREFUNK: Jim Morrison claimed “The West is the best,” and we won’t argue. But, the East has a few cool things, including craft beer. Pint Defiance’s Sunday Sampler checks in with the East as in Dogfish Head Namaste Witbier, Against the Grain The Brown Note ale, Stillwater Artisanal Ales Nu-Tropic IPA and Shmaltz Brewing Wishbone Session Double IPA. Head East from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

FUNKY SUNDAY

Every Sunday night a big pot of musical collaboration and creation is prepared at Rhythm & Rye, mixing funk, R&B, swamp, country, Latin, psychedelia, jazz, always with a big dose of the blues. At 9 p.m. Dan Tyack will be hosting with Ivan Gunderson and Miguel Pineda from The Brown Edition, plus special guests. No telling what’s going to happen or who else might be there, but it will be funky.

PREFUNK: Created by crossbreeding apricots and plums, there are dozens of varieties of pluots with an amazing range of color and flavor. There aren’t dozens of Three Magnets Brewing Co. 2014 Tart Helsing Pluot Farmhouse Ale. In fact the supply is so limited that 10-ounce pours are all you’ll receive. Have no fear, friends. Three Magnets has barrels and barrels full of other aged delights available, such as Helsing Junction Farmhouse Aged Blend with 30 percent wine barrel aged Helsing Junction Farmhouse Ale with yeast cultures of Brett Drei as well as the Dupont and Fantom Sacro present mild tartness, barnyard, peaches, pineapple, and spices with a high degree of dryness. The downtown Olympia brewery opens at 11 a.m.
