SATURDAY, JUNE 4 2016: South Sound events + craft beer …
British post-punk + Puyallup Brewing = “It Could Be So Wonderful”
Comedy Crawl + Zog’s = “Gettin’ Jiggy With It”
While the Purrs certainly do adorn their songs with psychedelic fringe, you’ll notice deeper ingrained layers of influences at play at The Valley tonight. On the top level, British post-punk is what most readily pops out, inspiring the comparisons the band has long received to bands such as the Church and Echo and the Bunnymen. Comparisons to the Verve are reductive, but somewhat accurate in the way that the Purrs similarly mine classic rock for inspiration — picking up heavy blues, mod attitude and bright jangle along the way. Lead singer Jima’s deadpan vocals will add the perfect lockstep to the band’s musically soaring and lamenting disposition. The Sky Giants, The Variety Hour and Dusty open.
PREFUNK: Although Eric Akeson began delivering his beer to local bottle shops and groceries stores in 2012, he’s been a beer enthusiast since working in a Kirkland alehouse in the mid-’90s. He took his homebrew hobby to the next level in 2011, opening Puyallup River Brewing Co. in his South Hill home’s backyard. In 2013, he launched the Puyallup River Alehouse in downtown Puyallup. In 2015 after being named Small Brewery of the Year at the Washington Beer Awards, he closed the Alehouse and became a production-only brewery. Akeson brews in a 500 square-foot-shop on his Puyallup property in a 7-barrel system, four 7-barrel fermenters and two 15-barrel fermenters. From noon to 2 p.m. Akeson and his award-winning beers will be hanging out at 99 Bottles in Federal Way.
You loved to crawl as a baby. You have 12 T-shirts from various bar crawl outings. Tonight, Bremerton hosts the Comedy Crawl. Six comedians will perform during the event, formatted similar to a bar crawl, with the first show at LoveCraft Brewing Co. at 7 p.m., Wobbly Hopps Brewery at 8 p.m. and Mobster Mike’s Comedy Club at 9 p.m. Comedians performing at the Comedy Crawl include Mike Wally Walter, who has been doing comedy for 34 years opening for bands, touring overseas, headlining comedy clubs across the US and Canada. No cover at the first two stops.
PREFUNK: Coming off their blistering show at the Gig Harbor Beer Festival, party band Sounds Like Dolores will shake Zog’s party lodge at 5 p.m. The Fox Island grocery store and amazing taproom will have a bunch of 10 Barrel Brewing beers on tap, which means 10 Barrel rep Kevin Lind will be in the house, which means expect some crazy-ass Lind dancing when the band performs “Gettin’ Jiggy With It.”
