If you’re looking for a last-minute adventure to get out of town this weekend, Yakima Valley’s Varietal Beer Co. is hosting GoatFest in Sunnyside on May 10. Consisting of German bock-style and other German-style lagers, the event will be held at Centennial Square across the street from the Varietal brewery. Varietal partnered with Nuestra Casa again this year as the non-profit recipient of all proceeds from this event. Nuestra Casa’s mission is to empower immigrants to create positive changes, enriching themselves, their families, and their communities through education, advocacy, and mutual support. In celebration, Peaks & Pints presents a Friday beer flight of Varietal Beer we call the Peaks & Pints Varietal Beer Flight.
Peaks & Pints Varietal Beer Flight
Varietal Hell S
4.8% ABV
This week, Varietal’s GoatFest release is a new helles-style lager, “HELL S.” They dug deep into the well of beer names to present you with this simple beauty. The Hell S comes from German malt and Hallertau Mittelfrueh hops in the boil before a long, cool lager fermentation.
Varietal XOXO Krush IPA
6.1% ABV
This 100-percent Krush hop IPA is brewed with Taproom Beer Co. in San Diego and John I Haas for the 2024 hop harvest. They used Krush Lupomax pellets to boost deep tropical flavors of passionfruit and melon. Lupomax is a concentrated hop pellet product that delivers a consistent, optimized hop flavor. It’s made with a higher concentration of lupulin and less vegetative matter than traditional Type 90 pellets.
Varietal Sup Cuz
6.7% ABV
Collaboration with Loza Farms, this 2021 GABF silver medalist hazy IPA is brewed with Amarillo, Comet, and Citra hops for dank grapefruit and tropical fruit notes.
Varietal Twine Climber
6.7% ABV
Chris Baum, John Cope, Chad Roberts, David Paulson, and Karl Vanevenhoven opened Varietal Beer Co. in April 2018 in the Port of Sunnyside between Yakima and the Tri-Cities in Eastern Washington. The owners had a variety of dreams and life goals, but their Venn diagram centered on owning a brewery in the Yakima Valley. Brewed with Citra, Simcoe, and Mosaic, Twine Climber is a citrus-style West Coast IPA.
Varietal Dammit Bobby!
6.8% ABV
Varietal collaborated with Barley Brown’s on this West Coast IPA, which is heavily hopped with Simcoe, Chinook, Galaxy, and a touch of Amarillo for the flavor of papaya and grapefruit. It finishes with a classic bitterness.
