Peaks and Pints Beer Flight: Kulshan Brewing

Share

Founded in 2012 by Bellingham native David Vitt, Kulshan Brewing is one of the fastest-growing breweries in Whatcom County. Just one year after opening, they doubled the size of their brewhouse to 15 barrels to keep up with demand. In 2015, Kulshan opened a second brewery, affectionately named “K2”, across town with a 30-barrel brewhouse. In 2019, Kulshan won the Peaks & Pints Tournament of Beer: Northwest Pilsners with their German-Style Pilsner, which will be on tap Thursday night. In the summer of 2021, Kulshan opened Trackside Brewery and Beer Garden, a pilot brewery and seasonal, pop-up beer garden located on the former Georgia Pacific paper mill site in downtown Bellingham’s redeveloping waterfront district. Kulshan recently released their Dad Bod Hazy Pale Ale and Zwickel Festbier, and Peaks & Pints invites you to taste them and other Kulshan beers from 5-8 p.m. tonight. In addition to our Lodge Meeting with Kulshan, we offer an all-day flight of Kulshan beers — a flight we’re calling Peaks and Pints Beer Flight: Kulshan Brewing.

Peaks and Pints Beer Flight: Kulshan Brewing

Kulshan Raspberry Gose

4% ABV

Gose derives its name from the river in Germany, located in a mineral-rich region centered around the town of Leipzig. In the Middle Ages, it’s where gose beer got its start, according to the German Beer Institute. It’s one of the few beer styles in the world that calls for high-salinity water, which historians attribute to the high salt content in the city’s water.  Bright and highly sessionable, Kulshan’s Raspberry Gose pays homage to Northwest Washington’s unbeatable long summer days and the hardworking raspberry farmers of Whatcom County. Malted wheat, Pilsner malt` and German Perle hops, and fresh raspberries are inoculated for a hazy pink-ish summer sipper. Expect mild sour aroma with berry notes, some body, light malt base and slight tartness.

Kulshan Especial

4.5% ABV

Kulshan added their Especial, Mexican-style Pale Lager to their year-round offerings. It’s crushable lager with crisp malt notes that makes for a refreshing summer beverage, especially when paired with a lime wedge. Our team has been hard at work on this project for months, and we’re thrilled to release it into the world today! Our neighbors to the South in Mexico have been brewing pale lagers similar to Especial for nearly 150 years, and we’re so stoked to be able to offer this Bellingham-brewed take on the style,” says Wesley Finger, Kulshan head brewer.

Kulshan Red Cap

4.8% ABV

Kulshan’s Irish-style red ale is brewed with 2-row, Munich, Crystal, Crystal Wheat, and Roasted Barley — plus UK Admiral, Golding, and Willamette hops — for citrus, toasted malt, roast, and earthiness on the nose, followed by rich biscuit and sweet caramel notes with drying roast and light citrus hop balance. Expect a medium in body, creaminess on the pallet, and a malty sweet finish. Red Cap grabbed Gold at the 2018 Washington Beer Awards, plus Silver at the 2017 Best of Craft Beer, and back-to-back Bronze medals at the 2016 and 2017 Australian International Beer Awards.

Kulshan Pilsner

5.2% ABV

Kulshan’s German-style Pilsner won the 2019 Peaks and Pints’ Tournament of Beer: Northwest Pilsners, grabbed a gold medal at the 2017 Best of Craft Beer Award and a silver at the 2018 Washington Beer Awards, no doubt for its traditional clean and bready malt flavors supported by herbal, floral and slightly spicy hop aromatics, and flavor from Hallertau Magnum, Hallertau Perle, and Spalt Spalter hops. With a medium body and a dry finish, Kulshan Pilsner is a champion.

Kulshan Bastard Kat IPA

6.66% ABV

Crisp and snappy up front, smooth in the middle, and dry in the finish, Kulshan’s highly drinkable and flavorful Bastard Kat IPA grabbed gold at the 2015 Washington Beer Awards. Brewed in the West Coast IPA tradition with a prolific full hop flavor and aroma of Cascade hops, this beer balances said hop’s grapefruit and pine notes with caramel, bread dough and white cake.
