Hops For Habitat: Drinking For Conservation Returns to Peaks & Pints

There are fundraisers, and then there are the wild, winking, slightly unhinged beer-soaked love letters to the planet known as Drinking For Conservation. This is not your typical “silent auction with lukewarm chicken and a stiff PowerPoint” affair. No, this is zoo keepers in bat wings, biologists arm-wrestling brewery reps, and a Tacoma bar turned into a temporary watering hole for anyone who thinks saving a polar bear pairs well with a West Coast IPA.

On Thursday, Sept. 4, 2025, our friends from the Point Defiance Chapter of the American Association of Zoo Keepers — led by the indomitable, conservation-costumed Suzanne Akerman — crash back into Peaks & Pints for Hops For Habitat, a raucous, righteously tipsy benefit for The Nature Conservancy. From 6-9 p.m., fifty cents of every pint, pour, and pint-sized proclamation goes straight to protecting Washington’s forests, rivers, and shorelines. You drink. They conserve. The world sighs a tiny sigh of relief.

This isn’t a new love affair. Peaks & Pints has been riding shotgun with DFC since before we even opened in 2016, back when Suzanne and her crew were dragging their donation boxes through Parkway Tavern, Doyle’s Public House, and anywhere else that would tolerate a little righteous rabble-rousing for endangered species. They’ve rallied for rhinos, buzzed for bees, gone utterly batty for bats (yes, Akerman wore the wings), and they’ll likely keep inventing slogans until someone finally agrees to “Sauced for Sloths.”

Because here’s the whole point: they drink to help animals. They drink to help habitats. They drink because sometimes the most powerful act of conservation is also the simplest — gathering your friends, ordering a round, and refusing to let indifference win.

So join us. Toast the owls, aardvarks, and octopuses. Toast the forests still standing and the rivers still running. Toast the stubborn fact that joy and justice taste better when shared in a pint glass.
