FRIDAY, MARCH 3 2017: South Sound events + craft beer …

Jazzbones + Peaks and Pints = Silkifying

The Valley + Edison City Alehouse = Mirrorgloss and Darkenfloxx

SPACE IS THE PLACE

As the Pacific Northwest slammed their shorts over long johns into each other, Sky Cries Mary sold out show after show with their alternative to the alternative — a danceable, fluid and often hypnotic brand of music. Sky Cries Mary started as a drama student Roderick’s project. With six musicians and vocalist Anisa Romero the band drew from a grab bag of styles, including traditional Celtic folk, Tibetan chants, 1970s funk and tribal rhythms. At 9 p.m., the band reunites at Jazzbones, with Sage, The Hula Bees and Ring in support. Those of us who saw Sky Cries Mary at Tacoma’s Rialto Theater back in the day know this show has the potential to be a trippy, fun night out.

PREFUNK: Without going into the chemical physics of solubility and gas diffusion, let’s just say that nitrogen has a silkifying effect on beer. Nitrogenated brews, as opposed to carbonated ones, have a softer mouthfeel, taste less acidic and boast a creamier, more stable head. Left Hand’s Milk Stout was no bore before, and on nitro, it’s even better. Cocoa and burnt flavors from its dark roasted grains come forward first, followed by a wave of sweet cream thanks to the use of lactose sugar. Magnum hops help give the 6 percent-alcohol brew a bitter finish that entices the next sip. Throughout, the beer’s ultra-smooth texture inches it closer to chocolate milk than you thought a beer could get. To experience the visual marvel —a cascading waterfall of fine bubbles — and tasty treat, nestle up to Peaks and Pints’ Western red cedar tap log and enjoy.

DANCE POP-ISH NIGHT

Yo, Mirrorgloss is at The Valley tonight! With Najamoniq Todd and Del Brown as dual lead vocalists, they curate blissfully moveable dance-rock that flirts with disco and punk, thanks to their soulful voices and programmed beats. Lo-fi band Zell, the latest project from Dylan Treleven, joins Mirrorgloss and electronica pals Lobsana at 8 p.m.

PREFUNK: A big congratulations to Edison City Alehouse on its two-year anniversary. The South Tacoma bottle shop and taproom will place two candles on its cake and tap an impressive lineup of craft beer, including Cloudburst Nitro Darkenfloxx, Skookum Barren Wood, Crooked Stave Nightmare on Brett and a special anniversary brewed brewed for Edison by Three Magnets Brewing, Orphan Road. According to Edison City anniversary hype, Orphan Road, an imperial oatmeal stout with cocoa nibs, vanilla bean and almond oil extract. The party begins at 5 p.m.
