MONDAY PREFUNK: Craft beer before Star Trek Beyond and Leonard Pitts Jr.

Share

MONDAY, OCT. 3 2016: South Sound beer + craft beer

The Blue Mouse Theatre + RAM Brewery = Ramming speed

University of Puget Sound + Silver City Brewery = Silver tongue

STAR TREK BEYOND

The Star Trek of today is less about traveling to distant worlds to learn valuable lessons regarding society and more about running through corridors and leaping off big, high moving things before the madman destroys the city/planet/space base/cosmos/whatever. Star Trek Beyond still falls heavily on action-adventure, as Hollywood demands of all modern blockbusters. But somewhere in there, you can sense a template taking shape for how this series might proceed — and it’s a familiar, welcome one. Catch it at 7 p.m. in The Blue Mouse Theatre in Tacoma’s Proctor neighborhood.

PREFUNK: The arrival of fall means one thing at The RAM Restaurant and Brewery, Oktoberfest Bier. The RAM’s Oktoberfest has won three consecutive medals at the North American Beer Awards. “Our recipe is modeled after the Munich fest biers and brewed but once a year,” says Dave Leonard, director of Brewing Operations. “We combine Munich and Vienna malts to create a smooth, toasty malt profile accented by spicy German hop notes. This copper hued lager is fermented cool for a clean, crisp finish, the perfect cohort to the season.” For South Sound Ram locations, click here.

PULITZER PRIZE PITTS

Leonard Pitts Jr., the Pulitzer Prize-winning national columnist with a column in The News Tribune, will deliver the fall Pierce Lecture at 8 p.m. in Schneebeck Concert Hall on the University of Puget Sound campus. The lecture and Q&A will give audiences a closer look at a commentator who rose to prominence by speaking with the kind of raw honesty you might expect from an intimate friend, on issues as vast as the country’s future (“America has gone mad and there’s no place to hide”) and as focused as the hot-tin-roof nature of politically correct language (“How I got in trouble with ‘ladies’”).

PREFUNK: For the third year in a row Silver City Brewery has brewed its Citra Wet Hop Pale Ale, which will be released at noon today. The Silver City brewing staff traveled to Eastern Washington to obtain a batch of fresh, whole-cone Citra hops. Within 48 hours, these hops were utilized producing aromas of tangerine and orange blossom and full flavors reminiscent of pineapple and pine resin creating a tantalizing experience for any hop lover.
