FRIDAY, JULY 22 2016: South Sound events + craft beer …

Halcion Halo + Ecliptic brewing = Parade of goodness

Down North + Christmas in July = North Pole

Good Vibes Trio + cask IPA = unfiltered good vibes

The Grand Cinema + STINK Cheese + Meat = Absolutely Fabulous

HALCION HALO

Rocking Tacoma since 2013, Halcion Halo will bust down The Valley’s door tonight with a truckload of their new CD, Joke Parade. No joke, and either is the new release. The project was recorded at Seattle’s Soundhouse Studios on reel-to-reel tape engineered and mixed by Mike Sebring, mastered by Blake Bickel at Dynamic Sound Services. The trio will perform songs off the new album after Johndus Beckman (lead singer of the Seattle band Ten Miles Wide) and Red Planet Rebels set the tone, beginning at 9 p.m.

PREFUNK: John Harris’ background in one steeped in Oregon’s rich craft brewing history. After beginning as a brewer at McMenamins’ breweries, he moved to Deschutes where he created the recipes for Mirror Pond, Black Butte Porter, Jubelale and Obsidian Stout.  He spent the next 20 years of his career as a brewmaster at Full Sail in charge of creating the Brewmaster Reserve line of beers. In 2013, Harris founded Ecliptic Brewing. Impressive, huh? You should taste his Ecliptic beers, which you can at 6 p.m. in Edison City Alehouse.

DOWN NORTH

If Rhythm & Rye’s roof had a patio Seattle-based funk band Down North would tear it off. The group brings an old school flavor to the genre that birthed some of music’s greats. From throbbing, syncopated base lines to funky flourishes and versatile vocals reminiscent of the King of Pop, Down North knows how to lay down the boogie. Get down at 9 p.m.

PREFUNK: We’ll all be counting down the days to Christmas before you know it. Then it’ll be time to bitch about shopping or return policies or whatever. For now, let’s take a few moments to prepare ourselves for the redeeming holiday that is Christmas. It’s merely a glimmer in our eyes at the moment, but retailers are actually beginning to stock up with holiday spirit; and clearly, we all need a little bit of that this summer. The Eastside Club Tavern knows. The longtime downtown Olympia craft beer haven celebrates Christmas in July beginning at noon. They know you miss your Jubelale, have a hankering for some Cabin Fever, and are in need of some Celebration — to mention just a few.

GOOD VIBES TRIO

Jazz fusion trio vibraphonist Dan Duval, saxophonist Steve Yamasaki and bassist Trent Leurquin will fill G. Donnalson’s with blues, bebop, swing and Latin at 7:30 p.m.

PREFUNK: As you know, cask Ale or “real ale” is made using traditional methods for fermenting and storing beer. Unpasteurized, unfiltered and unlike any beer you’ll find on the shelf or out of a keg, cask-conditioned ales are known for their unique flavor profiles and light natural carbonation. Silver City Brewery & Taproom will offer a cask full of their Two Phase Pilot IPA beginning at noon. Mosaic and Citra hops meets 2-Row, Maris Otter, Wheat, Light Crystal and Carapils grains meets English tradition.

BONUS: Sweetie darlings! Sweetie darlings! Thanks to syndication on Comedy Central in the mid-’90s, Absolutely Fabulous developed nearly as much of a fan base on this side of the pond as in its home in the U.K. The series follows the misadventures of the boozy, druggy, self-centered Edina (Jennifer Saunders) and Patsy (Joanna Lumley), two women working in the world of public relations and fashion. As reprehensible as the characters can be, AbFab turned into one of the most beloved touchstones of British comedy in the ’90s, returning for revival seasons periodically throughout the 2000s. Edina and Party return today, at 2, 4:10, 6:20 and 8:30 p.m. in The Grand Cinema. STINK Cheese + Meats and its El Tufo Spanish tapas bar will pour real French champagne for $10 a glass in celebration of the long awaited Absolutely Fabulous – The Movie.
