Established: 2014

Owners: New ownership as of March 2024 — Gary Wescott and son Nathan, alongside original shareholders.
Head Brewer: Still Dr. Owen McGrane, a doctor by day, brewmaster by night, now crafting under fresh stewardship.

Specialty:
Odd Otter is less brewery, more community kaleidoscope—eclectic beers, diverse folks, and Sunday flavor chaos via a Randall filled with curiosity. Expect whimsical styles named for aquatic mammals and an ethos of bold experimentation in their cozy historic taproom.

Five Notable Beers:

  • Ottermelon Hefeweizen – Melony, wheat-forward whimsy.

  • Notteronsense IPA – No nonsense hop punch.

  • Comrade Otter’s Russian Imperial Chocolate Stout – Rich, dark, unapologetic decadence.

  • Coconut Chai Porter – Spiced, creamy, and entirely unclassifiable.

  • Ottzel Quatzel Pale Ale – Made with Peruvian purple corn; colorful, crisp, undeniable.

🏆 Awards & Accolades:

  • 2015: Best Brewpub in Western Washington

  • 2017 WBA: Gold – Screeching Otter Double IPA & Odditea Brown Ale

  • 2018 WBA: Gold – Ottzel Quatzel Pale Ale

  • 2019 WBA: Silver – Von Himmel Schwarzbier

🦦 Fun Facts & Otter Lore:

  • Owen and John—co-founders—are medical doctors and military veterans; the building once housed WWII-era USO operations.

  • Nearly every beer name is a pun-powered tribute to otter lore.

  • Sundays bring a Randall filled with playful infusions, making beer a participatory event.

  • The brewery was recently sold in 2024 to Gary and Nathan Wescott, but Owen remains at the brew helm, ensuring continuity with maniacs for neon labels and hop whispers.

🔧 Current Status & Updates:

Odd Otter reopened in early 2024 under new ownership, retaining its downtown Tacoma address and core team. Taproom nights still hum with trivia, karaoke, queer-inclusive spirit, and occasional beer yoga. Owen continues to brew with the same playful precision—now with the added support of Wescott’s stewardship, aiming to keep the ottery flame burning in Tacoma’s heart.
