Biography

Established: 2015

Owners: Patrick and Keri Sherman (took over in 2023)
Head Brewer: Connor

Status & Ownership:
In early 2023, Patrick and Keri Sherman took the helm from Carl & Stephanie Leach, propelling North 47 into its next latitude of community brewing. The Shermans bring local roots, fresh focus, and endless ideas to the Browns Point taproom while preserving the brewpub’s original ethos.

Specialty:
Not bound by genre, but by integrity—North 47 crafts beer with a local latitude: measured, mindful, and just real enough to taste like Tacoma’s air. Styles span classic ales, crisp lagers, seasonal experiments, and hop-forward sips that don’t pretend to be anything they’re not.

Five Notable Beers (still on tap):

  • Bitchin’ Betty Blonde Ale – A smooth blonde with just enough brass.

  • Elated Slug ESB – Named after slug gatherings on the porch; rich English bitterness with garden pride.

  • Brown’s Point Porter – Deep, roasty, with the faintest echo of bay salt.

  • Summerland American Pale Ale – Zippy, dry, and tied to local soil and sunshine.

  • Nightmare 21 IPA – A hop dream built from 21 IBUs of subtle menace.

🏆 Recent Accolades:

  • 2018 Washington Beer Awards:

    • Gold – Amber Waves Hefeweizen

    • Silver – Bitchin’ Betty Blonde Ale

    • Bronze – Nightmare 21 IPA

  • 2019 Washington Beer Awards:

    • Gold – Guvnuh Brown Ale

🧪 Browns Point Homebrew Club Headquarters:

Under the Shermans, North 47 remains home to the Browns Point Homebrew Club, continuing to host meetings twice a month. The taproom still vibrates with fermentation conversations, beer table experiments, and amateur brewing brilliance in action.

Fun Facts & Local Lore:

  • Originally named for the 47th parallel slicing through Tacoma; a brewery that’s geography as philosophy.

  • Owned and operated since transition by veterans and alumni of Central Washington University.

  • Elated Slug ESB got named after a slug rave on the founders’ porch—one historic ferment break too many.

  • Taproom remains cozy, board-game stocked, pet-friendly, and popcorn-obligatory. They rotate local wines, ciders, and seltzers, too.
