FREE STATE OF JONES
In 1863, a poor Mississippi farmer named Newton Knight led a rebellion of deserters and escaped slaves against the Confederacy, waging guerrilla warfare from the swamps and eventually declaring their county the “Free State of Jones.” After the war, Knight moved away from white society with his new wife, a war ally and former slave named Rachel. He also tried to help with the Reconstruction effort, but soon saw that new racist laws were simply replacing the old racist laws. The real-life Knight lived well into the 20th Century; he died in 1922 having fathered 14 children. In the film life, Matthew McConaughey plays Knight at 3:05, 6 and 9 p.m. at The Grand Cinema.
PREFUNK: “When we say beer, you say BACON! And when we say bacon, you say BOURBON!” If we were real MCs, this is where we’d dramatically drop the mic and slowly back away. Never has there been a more smoldering threesome. At tonight’ Bacon, Bourbon and Brews, you can kill three birds by smothering your arteries and livers at the same time. Three cheers for efficiency! All jokes aside, beer, bourbon and bacon are swell together. The Swiss Restaurant and Pub hosts Bacon, Bourbon and Brews from 6-9 p.m. On tap expect Two Beers Brewing Co.’s Day Hike Summer Session Ale, Immersion Amber, Wonderland Trail IPA and Seattle Cider’s Semi-Sweet just for good measure. From the bottle comes Gentleman Jack Single Barrel, Regular Gentleman Jack, Old Forester, Woodford Reserve and Jack Honey. And in the kitchen Chef Jacob Thacker will bust out the bacon. Tickets are $35 for 13 tastes. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the food bank of St. Leo Parish.
JOVINO SANTOS NETO
Three-time Latin Grammy nominee Jovino Santos Neto developed his passion for music early in life just outside Rio de Janeiro. He attributes his appreciation for music to his home country, citing a diverse scene influenced by the sounds of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. He started taking piano lessons at age 13, but within six months abandoned them in favor of studying independently. By 16, his keyboard skills were earning him paid gigs, and he spent much of his 20s in a group led by renowned Brazilian composer Hermeto Pascoal. Today, he’s one of the top Brazilian musicians. Catch this master pianist, composer, arranger, flutist, and player of a multitude of other instruments at 8 p.m. in B Sharp Coffee House.
PREFUNK: Rainier Growlers on South Hill Puyallup will host Puyallup River Brewing and its award-winning beers from 6-9 p.m. Don’t be surprised if you can sip award-winning Mud Mountain Milk Stout our head brewer Eric Akeson’s award-winning Saisons.
Tacoma’s Nolan Garrett’s music is a mix of throbbing rock and roll energy combined with pop sensibilities, raw blues, classic rock, tight funk and grunge abandon. His live shows are famous for their high energy and his tremendous ability to engage a crowd and leave them breathless. The guitarist and singer cites sharing the bill with Chris Isaak, Johnny Lang and playing in front of 600 peers at his high school as some of his most profound live experiences so far. Catch him at 6:30 p.m. in Old Town Park as part of Treos Summer Concert Series.
