WEDNESDAY NOV. 16 2016: South Sound events + craft beer …

Pacific Brewing & Malting Co. + Peaks and Pints = Kristen Marlo and Kristal Dunkel Weizen

B Sharp Coffee House + The Red Hot = Wild

University of Puget Sound + Pint Defiance = dynamic duo

SINGING BEERTENDER

Singer/songwriter Kristen Marlo began singing before she could talk, and hasn’t stopped since. She is a classically trained vocalist and self-taught guitarist, but also an accomplished composer and lyricist and … bartender. That’s right. Behind the mic, her songs cover the full range of human emotion — from love and lust to rage and revenge. Behind Peaks and Pints’ Nalley Pickles barrel built bar, her dialogue covers the full range of wise cranks and barleywines. Catch Marlo at 7 p.m. in Pacific Brewing & Malting Co.’s taproom.

PREFUNK: Peaks and Pints will host a lodge meeting and canned food drive with 7 Seas Brewing Co. at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16. In addition to special 7 Seas craft beers, those who bring in canned goods for the Emergency Food Network will receive a raffle tickets and the opportunity to score some sweet 7 Seas swag. During the lodge meeting, 7 Seas’ Kristal Dunkel Weizen, Broken Mast Brown Ale, Chili Pepper Export Stout, Rude Parrot IPA, Winter Ale and 253 Pilsner will pour from our Western red cedar tap log. Indeed, we’ll be pouring several 7 Seas taproom only brews.

LOCAL TALENT

Sometimes it’s all about the song. At 7 p.m., B Sharp Coffee House in Tacoma’s Theater District hosts Songwriters in the Round, a chance for you to hear some top-notch local songsmiths like Billy Stoops, Leanne Trevalyan and Stephanie Anne Johnson. Other times it’s the strumming. At 7 p.m., B Sharp Coffee House in Tacoma’s Theater District hosts Songwriters in the Round, a chance for you to hear some top-notch local songsmiths like Billy Stoops, Leanne Trevalyan and Stephanie Anne Johnson. More often than not it’s about the voice. At 7 p.m., B Sharp Coffee House in Tacoma’s Theater District hosts Songwriters in the Round, a chance for you to hear some top-notch local songsmiths like Billy Stoops, Leanne Trevalyan and Stephanie Anne Johnson. Thankfully, it’s also about the benefitting Kids of Hope.

PREFUNK: Are you in love with sour beer? Or alternately, do you have no idea what a sour beer is? E-9 Brewery at Sixth and Pine in Tacoma excels at the beer style. Seriously. Notable sour beer brewers drop in on the Tacoma brewery all the time to check out the handiwork of E-9 head brewer Shane Johns and his Robin, Donovan Stewart. At 5 p.m., Johns, Stewart and the E-9 crew will walk across the street to The Red Hot and tap their Montamorency Cherry Wild, Golden Berry Wild, Blackberry Farmhouse, Wild Tacoma Cherry (Bing), Tayberry Farmhouse and the debut of the E-9 Funky Farmer Ralph Plum.

MBIRA MIND MELD

Free your mind with the warm buzz of the mbira dzavadzimu, and your body will follow. The metal-pronged thumb piano from Zimbabwe can chase away the bad energy of, say, potholed streets and impatient drivers. Or it can be used to call up and chat with an ancestor about getting through rough times. Either way, the University of Puget Sound hosts “Mbira: Music of the Spirits of Zimbabwe” at 7:30 p.m. in the Kilworth Memorial Chapel. Join virtuoso mbira players Fradreck Mujuru and Erica Azim in celebrating the cultures of Zimbabwe and South Africa.

PREFUNK: Pint Defiance will double down and double up on two Northwest breweries from 5-7 p.m. — Fremont Brewing and pFriem Family Brewers. Pint D will pour Fremont Beta IPA, pFriem El Dorado Single Hop Pale Ale, Fremont S’Mores-Infused Proletariat Porter, pFriem Kumquat Farmhouse Ale, Fremont La Premiere Brett IPA and pFriem Dry Irish Stout.
