WEDNESDAY, JAN. 11 2017: South Sound events + craft beer …

The Grand Cinema + Peaks and Pints = Karts and Barrels

King’s Books + The Red Hot = Lushes

Studio 6 Ballroom + Pint Defiance = Hops

VIDEO GAME OPEN HOUSE

Once the refuge of the nerd, the otherworld of video games is now accessible to nearly everyone. An untold number of hours are spent gaming on home computers, on cell phones during bus rides, and, around these parts, The Grand Cinema. The Tacoma indie movie house hosts a free open house to let you experience Super Smash Bros, Super Mario Kart 8 and Rocket League with your friends on their giant movie screens from 9-11 p.m. Gaming spots are limited and require registration to participate at grandcinema.com. Admission is free for all.

PREFUNK: Peaks and Pints is still celebrating Double Mountain Brewery’s ninth anniversary, loading our cooler with its ninth anniversary craft beer, The Divine Anniversary Bourbon Barrel Aged Brown. Divine indeed. Using a strong brown ale as its base beer, owner/brewmaster Matt Swihart aged the beer in two different barrels — Woodford Reserve barrels and McArthy’s Peaty Whiskey barrels — for about a year. At 9.0% ABV, this barrel-aged craft beer is a great sipper.

THE SUN ALSO RISES

Scott Fitzgerald drunkenly arguing with Zelda. Gertrude Stein and Ernest Hemingway trading barbs. What could be better? Maybe a case of 2016 Bourbon Abominable Coffee/Cinnamon variant with mid-’80s Elle Macpherson on top, but outside of that, not much. The Lost Generation, as named by Stein, was a group of ex-pat writers and artists who met regularly at cafés around Paris and Madrid. Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises contains a similar ethos to what they espoused. Drop by King’s Books at 6:30 p.m. and give your two cents as the Classic Books Club will be breaking down the novel.

PREFUNK: Fremont Brewing Co. is holding the official South Sound release party for its new, delicious Lush IPA at 5 p.m. in The Red Hot. The Sixth Avenue craft beer hangout will also tap other Fremont treats, such as Lush IPA Mosaic variant. Lush IPA Citra variant. 2015 Kentucky Dark Star, 2015 Bourbon Abominable, 2016 Bourbon Abominable and 2016 Bourbon Abominable Coffee/Cinnamon variant.

SWING

Do you have holiday pounds on the brain? Swing them all off tonight as it’s Midweek Swing, Blues and Fusion Night at Studio 6 Ballroom on Tacoma’s Sixth Avenue. And if you’re feeling a bit like a rusty pelican yourself when it comes to the hops, flips, twists, and turns, the Ballroom’s dance classes have just begun. Put on your flip skirt or wide-leg pants and do that boogie-woogie, cool cats at 8:30 p.m.

PREFUNK: Holy Mountain Brewing exceeded expectations with the very first beers it poured in October 2014, instantly impressing local beer connoisseurs with an exciting array of uncommon, buzzworthy beers. Located in Seattle’s Interbay neighborhood, near the Magnolia Bridge, and started by Adam Paysse, Colin Lenfesty and Mike Murphy, Holy Mountain has been killing it with their barrel program. From 5-7 p.m., Pint Defiance will shine a bright light on the Seattle brewery, tapping Kiln & Cone Dry-Hopped Pale, Three Fates Czech-style Pilsner, Covenant Oak-Aged Farmhouse, Barrel-Aged King’s Head Double Brown Ale, Crystal Ship Foudre Aged Saison and Bonne Nuit Belgian Style Strong Ale.
