Washington Trails & Taps Weekly Recap: September 1–7, 2025

September slid in with smoky skies, fading wildflowers, and early hints of fall color. Trailheads filled quickly, while wildfires kept the air tinged with haze. Yet hikers still reported berries, alpine solitude, and those crystalline moments that only Washington’s backcountry delivers.

🌿 WTA Trip Report Highlights

  • Labyrinth Mountain & Minotaur Lake — Sept. 6
A demanding climb rewarded with alpine solitude and panoramic views over Minotaur and Theseus Lakes. Snow-free, bug-free tread with ripe berries and early fall hues. Loose footing on descent—worth it for the vistas.
  • Circle Peak — Sept. 3
Short and sweet (~5 miles) on smooth, snow-free trail with easy access. Light crowds (one hiker all day) and superabundant blueberries. Broad looks over the White Chuck River valley made for a refreshing hot-day escape.
  • Blanca Lake via Virgin Lake — Sept. 5
Rooted, step-heavy near Virgin Lake, then the turquoise drama of Blanca. Meadows loaded with Vaccinium deliciosum blueberries. Haze muted the basin view; parking hit ~20 cars by 11 a.m.—arrive early.
  • Ptarmigan Ridge (Artist Point) — Sept. 6
Wildflowers and blueberry patches framed moody, smoke-veiled looks toward Baker. Intermittent snow crossings manageable; otherwise excellent tread and mid-morning parking still available.

🛡️ Park & Ranger Updates

  • Campfire bans remain in effect across most public lands; propane/gas stoves only.
  • Cowlitz, Clark, and Skamania counties continue outdoor burning prohibitions through Sept. 30.

🌳 Regional Burn Bans & Alerts

  • Washington State Parks: Level 3 burn bans at many parks (no wood or charcoal; propane only).
  • Snohomish County: Stage 1 burn ban just ended Aug. 31; continued caution advised.

🔥 Wildfire & Smoke Watch

  • Bear Gulch Fire (Olympic NP): 10,000+ acres, ~9% contained; periodic haze over Puget Sound.
  • Wildcat Fire (east of Naches): ~7,600 acres, uncontained; smoke impacts in Cascade valleys.
  • Lower Sugarloaf Fire (Chelan Co.): 6,200+ acres, lightning-caused, uncontained.
  • Jolly Mountain Fire (Kittitas Co.): 14,500+ acres; emergency declarations and intermittent access constraints.
  • Air Quality: Hazy but largely manageable; sensitive groups should limit strenuous activity on smoky days.

🚓 Ranger & Trail Patrol Notes

  • Reduced visibility is possible at higher elevations; heed any posted detours or advisories.
  • Drones are prohibited in state and national parks—citations issued for violations.

🔔 Notes for Hikers

  • No campfires: Assume propane-only unless signage clearly states otherwise.
  • Plan ahead: Popular lots (Blanca, Artist Point) fill fast—carpool and arrive early.
  • Air quality: Check AQI before long drives; smoke may obscure views and affect breathing.
  • Berry season peaking: Blueberries buoyed nearly every report—pack your leave-no-trace snack plan.

🍻 Crowler Pairing of the Week

Hetty Alice Beers — Fresh Hop Valley Fog IPA
A fresh hop haze built for September: lush, resinous green hop character swirled with citrus and pine, softened by a pillowy body. Hetty Alice Beers Valley Fog captures the fleeting glory of harvest season—bright, fragrant, and gone all too soon—just like those last bluebird days on smoky ridges.
