TUESDAY, MAY 31 2016: South Sound events + craft beer …

Funny opera + great saxophone = applause
Sketch comedy + sour beers = funny faces

SILLY MARGUERITE

The fine French drama Marguerite fictionalizes the life of American socialite Florence Foster Jenkins, whose vocal performances of classical arias, beginning in private music clubs and culminating in a 1944 recital at Carnegie Hall, have earned her a large and respectful entry in the encyclopedia of bad. At the heart of the story is a lie that becomes a bigger lie, as everyone who surrounds Marguerite is complicit in feeding her delusions of vocal grandeur. But it is Catherine Frot’s title performance — full of warmth, humor, and hope — that carries the story and even leads to some laugh-out-loud moments. Catch the film at 9 p.m. in the Capitol Theater.
PREFUNK: Hot off his amazing performance at the Save KPLU concert at Cheney Stadium Friday, Tacoma-based saxophonist Kareem Kandi will provide the soundtrack for craft beer and cider drinkers at the Oly Taproom from 7-9 p.m. If there’s a North Coast Brewing Brother Thelonious Belgian Style Abbey Ale in Oly Taproom’s beer cooler, pop it open as it pairs well with Kandi.

PEELED BANANAS COMEDY NIGHT

The “showcase” Peeled Bananas Comedy Night is back with all comedy you can handle. B Sharp Coffee House has stepped forward to devote open mic comedy every Tuesday, nurturing newcomers and showcasing seasoned vets. However, the last Tuesday of the month is a “showcase night” when the best of the best offer a night of sketch comedy and stand-up. At 7:30 p.m., host Jill Silva will keep the laughs rolling thanks to Summer Azim, Anna Firth, Brittney Miller and Kikumi Maki. You’d be pretty hard-pressed to find a more fun way to spend a Tuesday night. And remember what the great Jack Handey once said: “Dad always thought laughter was the best medicine, which I guess is why several of us died of tuberculosis.”
PREFUNK: Even before it was understood how yeast and microbes affect brewing, all beer would likely have had some sourness. But in modern times, the “sour” style has evolved into a beer that has pronounced sourness ranging from simple puckering tartness to strong acidity. From 6-9 p.m., The Copper Door offers four light, tart, and flavorful sours as for its Tasting Tuesday program: Evil Twin Brewing Sour Bikini, Lagunitas Brewing Co. Aunt Sally, Wingman Brewers Razma Attack and Victory Brewing Kirsch Gose.
