SKULL KID

With a sound that merges Empire! Empire! (I was a Lonely Estate) and Joyce Manor, the men who make up Pittsburgh band Skull Kid know a thing or two about emo. The band made their way across the country to The Valley in Tacoma for an 8 p.m. show. Wait! There’s more! The band will perform as patrons play 20 different video games. In between two sets, The Valley hosts a small tourney of a surprise game.

PREFUNK: New Belgium Brewing celebrates its 25th anniversary with the release of five collaboration beers reinterpreting the brewer’s flagship, Fat Tire Amber Ale. Fat Tire was first conceived on a bike ride through Belgium and came to life as a homebrew in the late 1980s. Spurred on by accolades from friends and a grip of homebrewing awards, New Belgium co-founders Kim Jordan and Jeff Lebesch took the beer commercial in 1991. Since then, the 100 percent employee-owned company has become the nation’s 4th-largest craft brewery with distribution in 41 states and a second brewery just opening in Asheville, NC. New Belgium brewers teamed up with brewing friends at Allagash Brewing Company (Portland, ME), Avery Brewing (Boulder, Colo.), Firestone Walker (Paso Robles, CA), Hopworks Urban Brewery (Portland, OR) and Rhinegeist Brewery  (Cincinnati, OH) for the project. From 6-9 p.m. the Parkway Tavern will tap the new Fat Tires for all to enjoy.

LOCAL BOOK RELEASE

The Social Bar and Grill hosts a book release party for University Place resident Chanin Kaye (Escovedo) and her first novel, The 45 Loves of Lucy Lacrosse, at 7:30 p.m. A portion of all of the book sales and raffle tickets sales will be donated to The Rainbow Center (a local LGBTQ outreach) and Curtis High School performing arts department. Chanin tended bar for a few of Tacoma’s most popular spots including Stanley and Seaforts, Asado and the dueling piano bar Chopstix. “My life was absolute madness for a few years,” states Chanin. “There were times I was running between 7 and 8 part time jobs. My children went to their dad’s house on the weekend, so I took advantage of the kid-free nights to make some extra money tending bar. Chopstix was where the idea for this story actually started. The book follows colorful characters, Lucy’s neurotic fantasies, her childhood stories and the roller coaster ride as she navigates her way through it all.”

PREFUNK: 10 Barrel Brewing Company dates back to 2006 when twin brothers Chris and Jeremy Cox moved from Portland to Bend to escape their corporate jobs and take a shot at buying and running a bar — Lucy’s Place, which they renamed JC’s Bar & Grill. Their love for craft beer resulted in their small startup called Wildfire Brewing in 2006. The brothers and partner Garret Wales focused on selling their beers to local bars and restaurants. The first two beers in the lineup were Code 24 Pale Ale and Logger Lager, followed by Backdraft IPA. In 2009, Wildfire restaurants, a chain of eateries with locations in Illinois, Minnesota, Virginia and Georgia, forced the trio to change their brewery name — which they changed to 10 Barrel Brewing Company after the small craft brewing system. At 7 p.m., Thursday, June 23 2016, 10 Barrel walks into the new BrewDad’s of Bonney Lake with Sinister Black Ale, Apocalypse IPA, JOE IPA and more plus some schwag.

AMERICA’S CLASSIC JAZZ FESTIVAL

In the early 1900s rural blues and the voice-like instrumentals of black church music poured into New Orleans like a river of polyrhythms, changing the European dynamics of melody. Many white musicians in that environment absorbed what blacks were playing, added touches of their own, and in the case of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, made the first jazz disc. Next, the America’s Classic Jazz Festival in Lacey was born. We might have left out a few other significant American classic jazz moments of history, but the then result is the America’s Classic Jazz Festival opens today and runs through June 26 at the Saint Martin’s University Campus – Marcus Pavilion in Olympia. The Kick Off Party with St. Louis Rivermen, High Sierra and Fat Babies Classic JB is in the Pavilion with Grand Dominion, Jeff Barnhart’s Charlotte’s Boy’s, Lance Buller/Roadstars at neighboring Worthington Center. Both shows run 7-10:30 p.m.

PREFUNK: It’s shaping up to be a big summer for sour beers in the South Sound. These brews are made with wild yeasts and bacteria, which lend distinctive sourness and sharp tartness. Last weekend Engine House No. 9 came home from the Washington Beer Awards with a bunch of medals for their sours. Today, Fish Brewing will release a limited Strawberry Berliner Weiss in their Fish Tale Brewpub in downtown Olympia, as well as their Fish Brewing Tap Room in Woodinville. The Berliner Weisse is a light-bodied sour wheat beer. It’s usually very pale to straw in color, highly carbonated, and has a distinctive acidic sourness from a combination of yeast and lactic acid bacteria. In Germany, a shot of fruit is customarily offered with the beer to counteract the tartness. The Berliner Weisse has very little hop bitterness; rather, it offers some light bread-like or grainy tones from the wheat, which makes up a significant proportion of the grist.
