THURSDAY MAY 26 2016: South Sound events + craft beer …

The Fame Riot + Release Point IPA = SOAR!

“Godspell” + Frambois = humility, love, brotherhood …

POP HOOKS

You’ve seen The Fame Riot, right? Two glam-rock brothers donning sparkles, scarves and messy long hair and drawing inspiration from genre-hoppers such as Foxy Shazam and dance-rock like Hot Chip, with an impeccable pop sheen. And the music — so catchy! If you haven’t seen this Tacoma band explode with new wave synth, pop hooks and steadfast club beats, catch them with LSD and the Search for God and Sick Sister at 8:30 p.n. in The Valley.

PREFUNK: Joint Base Lewis-McChord’s 4th Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, abbreviated as the 4/160 SOAR and also known as Night Stalkers, is a special operations force of the US Army that provides helicopter aviation support for general purpose forces and special operations forces. Narrows Brewing Company brewed Release Point IPA in honor of 4/160 SOAR, and its supporting organization Night Stalkers Association West — which has more than 3,000 members throughout the regiment and its four auxiliary chapters. It provides financial assistance and support to soldiers and their families. Narrows Brewing will celebrate the 4/160 SOAR, as well as all military and first responders, with the release of Release Point IPA from 1-9 p.m. Expect police boats, responder vehicles, and — of course — delicious craft beer.

GODSPELL

When “Godspell” opened, in 1971, the Vietnam War was still raging. Charles Manson was on trial, Hunter S. Thompson was dropping acid in Las Vegas and Jim Morrison had just died in a bathtub. In the apocalyptic zeitgeist of 1971, it seemed perfectly reasonable to see a musical about Jesus Christ dancing with a bunch of circus clowns in an empty playground. We mean, why not? Forty-five years later, “Godspell” is just as bizarre and hokey as ever — and it’s still unavoidably fun. The story is the Book of Matthew: Jesus appears, he shares some wisdom, his apostles rejoice, Judas betrays him, the Messiah is crucified. Mostly, his followers sing upbeat songs. They pray. They sup. They dance constantly. The South Puget Sound Community College Drama Department stages “Godspell” at 7 p.m. in The Washington Center in downtown Olympia.

PREFUNK: Fifteen years ago, Lambic beer was dying. People in Belgium didn’t even drink it anymore, and no one anywhere else had ever heard of the stuff. Who wanted sour beer, anyway? These days, with Belgian beer bars springing up like mushrooms after a rain, Lambic is experiencing a renaissance. Lambics can be made with a variety of fruits, commonly distinguished by names like frambois (raspberry), kriek (cherry), pêche (peach) and cassis (black currant). They are fermented with wild strains of yeast and sometimes specific types of bacteria, which accentuate the fruit flavors and bring out sourness and tartness. Fish Brewing Company releases its limited run Frambois at 5 p.m. in its Fish Tale Brewpub in downtown Olympia. Enjoy a never before caught Fish.
