The Daily Outside: Spring Awakenings, Pier into the Night … 2.18.26

Wednesday’s Daily Outside slips between tide and treetop — a quick underwater snack run, a gentle lesson in how spring actually arrives, and a dockside night dive that turns Puget Sound into its own strange cinema.

Snack time in the Salish Sea, starring tiny hustlers and one shy legend

This half-hour feeding session is a reminder that the Salish Sea is less postcard, more living neighborhood. Hermit crabs hustle, surf perch dart through the crowd, and aquarists narrate the quiet chaos with equal parts science and affection. If luck leans your way, an octopus might reach from its den for a snack — slow, deliberate, mildly unimpressed with the whole human situation.

What to know before you go
• Free program, drop in anytime
• Aquarists and naturalists on hand for questions
• Children must be supervised; this isn’t a drop-off program
• Donations welcome to help keep programs free

Sometimes “outside” is simply watching a hermit crab sprint for dinner and feeling your brain loosen its grip.

When winter loosens its grip and the first quiet signs begin

Spring Awakenings

Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2026 • 5:30–7 p.m.
Tacoma Public Library — Fern Hill Branch
765 S 84th St., Tacoma
Free • Hybrid event (in person or Zoom)

Late February carries that almost-there energy — longer light, damp soil, birds rehearsing spring before the calendar signs off. Educator Sarah Low walks through how trees wake from dormancy, why buds swell, how wildlife shifts its rhythm, and what to watch for as the season begins to tilt. It’s less a lecture than a sensory nudge, a reminder that the city’s canopy doesn’t flip a switch — it whispers.

What to know before you go
• Hybrid format; join in person or virtually
• Hosted at Fern Hill Branch Library
• Free community program supported by Tacoma Creates

Here’s your chance to meet Puget Sound without getting wet. Divers and an underwater ROV live-stream whatever drifts into view beneath the dock while biologists narrate the unfolding show. Feather-duster worms flare open, crabs sidestep through the dark, nudibranchs glow like misplaced confetti — and sometimes a giant Pacific octopus slides into frame, reminding everyone who really runs the place.

Hosted on the 7 Seas Brewing dock, the program keeps you warm under cover while the real action unfolds below. It’s unpredictable, a little weird, and deeply Tacoma in the best way.

What to know before you go
• Free, no RSVP required
• All ages welcome
• Live-streamed dive with real-time species ID
• Donation options available if you’d like to support the program

Afterward at Peaks & Pints

When the tide settles and the last underwater creature slips back into the dark, drift up to Proctor and let the night land softly. Peaks & Pints is open and glowing — a warm landing after dockside dives and early hints of spring. Our house pours Lumberbeard Brewing Cut Off Flannel IPA and Finnriver Buckhorn Dry Cider are waiting like familiar trail markers, one bright and hop-laced, the other crisp and orchard-dry. Swap stories, shake off the salt air, and let the day exhale before the rest of the week comes rushing back in.
