The Daily Outside: Salt Air, Small Wild Things 4.23.26
Thursday’s Daily Outside leans toward the water in two ways — one close and contained, one wide open — where the inland sea shows itself in quick flashes of motion, from tank glass to lighthouse views.
Hermit crabs, darting fish, and the small wild drama of snack time
Harbor WildWatch — Feeding Frenzy!
Thursday, April 23, 2026 • 4–4:30 p.m.
Harbor WildWatch
3207 Harborview Dr, Gig Harbor
Free • Drop-in • Indoor • Family-friendly
This is marine life stripped of its stillness. During Harbor WildWatch’s daily Feeding Frenzy, the tanks come alive as hermit crabs scramble, surf perch flash through the water, and, if timing and luck align, the resident octopus reaches out from its den for a quick, curious grab. It’s a short window, but a vivid one — the kind that turns observation into understanding almost instantly.
Naturalists and aquarists are on hand throughout, offering context without overwhelming the moment, answering questions, and connecting these small feeding behaviors to the larger rhythms of the Salish Sea just beyond the glass. It’s equal parts education and spectacle, scaled perfectly for a quick, meaningful stop along the waterfront.
Children are welcome but must be supervised by an adult for the duration of the program. Donations are appreciated to help keep programs free.

A lighthouse run, salty air, and scenery that does half the work
Tacoma Runners — Thursday Run
Thursday, April 23, 2026 • 6:30 p.m.
North 47 Brewing Co.
1000 Town Center NE #160, Tacoma
Free • All ages • All paces • Dogs welcome
This is the kind of route that gently rearranges your expectations of a weekday run. Starting from North 47 Brewing, the group heads toward Browns Point, where the road opens up to Puget Sound, the air carries that familiar salt edge, and a lighthouse appears like it’s just part of the neighborhood scenery. It’s a run built as much for the views as the movement — long stretches where conversation drifts, then pauses as everyone remembers to look up.
Tacoma Runners keeps it intentionally inclusive, with sweeps ensuring no one gets left behind and a pace spectrum that runs from steady to social. Whether you’re chasing miles, company, or just the excuse to see the lighthouse again, it all fits here without much fuss.
First-timers should complete a one-time waiver before joining.

Afterward, meet up at Peaks & Pints.
We suggest something crisp and coastal in spirit — maybe a bright IPA or the house Finnriver Buckhorn Dry Cider — because a day that starts with sea life and ends with salt air deserves a proper, unhurried finish.
