Peaks & Pints Westbound & Down Beer Flight

Share

Founded in Idaho Springs, Colorado, along the mountain corridor that carries skiers, hikers, climbers, rafters, and wanderers deeper into the Rockies, Westbound & Down Brewing has spent the last decade building a reputation for doing something deceptively difficult: brewing exceptional beer across a remarkable range of styles. Hazy IPA. West Coast IPA. Pale ale. Barrel-aged stout. The brewery’s trophy case reflects that versatility, but the real story is in the glass.

Today’s flight offers a tour through the breadth that earned Westbound & Down one of craft beer’s highest honors. Five beers, five distinct personalities, one brewery operating at an exceptionally high level.

Westbound & Down Colorado Pale Ale

5.5% ABV | American Pale Ale | Idaho Springs, Colorado

Like finding the perfect overlook on a mountain highway just as the clouds part, Colorado Pale Ale reveals itself slowly and then all at once. Orange peel and bright citrus glide across a lean malt frame while whispers of pine and tropical fruit linger in the background. Nothing feels excessive. Nothing feels forced. Crisp, balanced, and quietly confident, it’s a reminder that pale ale remains one of craft beer’s most enduring pleasures.

Westbound & Down Don’t Hassle the Hef

5.4% ABV | South German-Style Hefeweizen

Sunlight seems to live inside this glass. Aromas of fresh banana, clove spice, and rising bread dough drift upward in that unmistakable Bavarian perfume, followed by a pillowy wheat body that feels both substantial and remarkably easy on its feet. A gentle citrus sparkle brightens the finish, keeping the beer lively and refreshing as each sip melts effortlessly into the next. Winner of a silver medal at the 2024 Great American Beer Festival, Don’t Hassle the ‘Hef is a reminder that mastery often looks deceptively simple — just grain, yeast, time, and a brewery confident enough to let tradition do the talking.

Westbound & Down Juice Caboose

7.2% ABV | Hazy IPA

A rolling freight train loaded entirely with ripe fruit somehow found its way into a pint glass. Mango, pineapple, and juicy citrus tumble forward in lush succession while a soft haze cushions every corner of the ride. Just beneath the tropical abundance lurks enough dank intrigue to keep things grounded. Smooth, expressive, and wonderfully immersive, Juice Caboose rolls along with the easy confidence of a beer that knows exactly where it’s headed.

Westbound & Down Spirit of the West IPA

6.8% ABV | West Coast IPA

Bright and precise as sunlight reflecting off high-country granite, this modern West Coast IPA balances energy with elegance. Tangerine and pineapple lead the way before softer notes of melon, berry, and citrus zest begin unfolding in layers. A firm bitterness provides structure without stealing the spotlight, leaving behind a dry, focused finish that feels both contemporary and timeless.

Westbound & Down Westbound IPA

7% ABV | West Coast IPA

Some IPAs arrive swinging for the fences. This one prefers to cover the entire field. Grapefruit, citrus oils, and tropical fruit move effortlessly across the palate while a measured bitterness draws clean lines through the experience. A subtle thread of pine anchors everything in place. Refined, balanced, and beautifully composed, Westbound IPA showcases the confidence that comes from knowing exactly what you want to be.
