Peaks & Pints Beer Flight: Charlie Devereux

Share

Charlie Devereux, a graduate from Brown University with an MBA from Portland State University and several years chasing stories for the Vancouver Business Journal, joined John Harris at Full Sail Brewery in 1992. Harris spent 20 years as brewmaster at the Hood River brewery. Devereux went on to open Double Mountain Brewery in Hood River on St. Patrick’s Day 2007 with fellow Full Sail brewer Matt Swihart. After seven years running the business and culinary side of Double Mountain, and driving two hours a day from Portland to work, Devereux leaves Double and opens Wayfinder Beer with Rodney Muirhead, the barbecue master at Northeast Portland’s Podnah’s Pit; and Matt Jacobson, the force behind late-night pizza sensation Sizzle Pie and hard-charging rock label Relapse Records. Kevin Davey was hired to run the brewhouse, specializing in lagers and eventually cold IPAs. During COVID, Devereux sneakily launched VIA Beer with Kings & Daughters Brewing founder Kyle Larsen, who was in the brewhouse at Double Mountain during the Devereux years. Facing strong headwinds in the craft beer market, the duo decided to sunset the brand. Devereux is now a sales executive at Little Beast Brewing in Portland. Today, the Grit & Grain Podcast hosts Devereux in the Peaks & Pints Events Room at 3:30 p.m. In conjunction, we present an all-day flight of Devereux’s beer past — a flight we call Peaks & Pints Beer Flight: Charlie Devereux.

Double Mountain Kolsch

5.2% ABV

Double Mountain built its empire around 2-row pilsner malt sourced from British Columbia. We’re big fans of Pilsner malt — it imparts a smoothness to the brew, including Double Mountain’s Kolsch. A tribute to the style of beer native to Cologne (Koln), Germany, this beer is a very light straw pour with just a touch of haze and a decent egg-shell-white head. A little pepper, sourdough bread, biscuit, and light hops cross the nose. Firm, tangy hops come through on the palate — Sterling and Perle — a nice combo of soft malt, fresh grain, spicy pepper, and citrus. The finish is light and refreshing.

Wayfinder Jaws of Damnation

5.3% ABV

Wayfinder Beer’s Jaws of Damnation is a light, crisp, slightly sweet Japanese-style rice lager.

Little Beast Getting’ Froggy

6% ABV

Little Beast Brewing went all-in on the hops for this ultra-crushable hazy IPA. Huge notes of mango, mandarin orange, and red grapefruit leap from the glass, balanced by a dank edge from Simcoe that keeps it from going complete fruit bomb. Silky carbonation, medium body, and a bright, juicy finish make it a good decision for chasing that first warm breeze of Fool’s Spring.

Little Beast Green Queen

6% ABV

Green Queen West Coast IPA is jam-packed with piney and citrus qualities. Its medium hop assertiveness and grapefruit, lemon, pine, and melon notes are derived from a hop bill based on Cascade, Centennial, and Citra hops, enhanced with Cryo Centennial and Lemondrop Lupulin.

Little Beast Pinetop

6.4% ABV

This West Coast IPA, packed with Centennial, Mosaic, and Chinook hops, will have you seeing trees. Pinetop IPA sports aromas of pine and resin, lush notes of grapefruit, and a subtle woodsy character.
