Away days is a well-known term in English football (soccer) culture, referring to the day you watch your team play in another city. The day is about travelling with your community, celebrating (or commiserating) your team, and building experiences around your passion for football, travel, and beer. Opened in 2019 by former Toffee Club owners and British transplants Niki Diamond and Pete Hoppins, Away Days Brewing is inspired by a love of the beautiful game and favorite beer-drinking memories of European travels. After COVID-19 turned their corner of Southeast 10th and Hawthorne grittier with less foot traffic, they closed The Toffee Club in 2020, and their Away Days counterpart felt a bit adrift. Away Days now brews in a former linen manufacturing building at 1234 SE Cora while they figure out how to turn a successful SMBX small business crowd-funding investment campaign into a production brewery in Troutdale. Today, Peaks & Pints presents a flight of Away Days beer called Peaks & Pints Beer Flight: Away Days.
Peaks & Pints Beer Flight: Away Days
Away Days Crown and Anchor
4.5% ABV
While the cream ale originates in the US, Away Days switched up the game plan to brew it with all English ingredients, a nod to the “Cream of Manchester.” Crown and Anchor is a clean and crisp cream ale brewed with English base malts and flaked corn to make this beer extremely smooth, light-bodied, and quaffable. Ted Lasso inspires the name and design. The Crown and Anchor is the pub that Ted enjoys pints at throughout the season, and the can nods to the AFC Richmond kit.
Away Days Walking On Air
4.7% ABV
Away Days Brewing’s Walking On Air Extra Pale Ale, or XPA, is a stronger version of the classic pale ale style. This beer has more alcohol, hop flavor, and hop aroma than a pale ale, but not as much as an American IPA. Away Days’ version is brewed with Superdelic and Citra hops for a light-bodied citrus pale with a dry finish. Aussie and English 1980s kids will recognize the beer’s title.
Away Days Jazz Stripes
6.7% ABV
Brewed with Upright Brewing in Portland, Jazz Stipes is a smooth West Coast IPA with dank notes and a touch of rye.
Away Days Bucket Hat Bobby
9% ABV
Harnessing the spirits of all slain and martyred chickens through the inverted KFC bucket on his head, your cousin Bobby has come a long way since getting the top of his head scratched off in Colonel Sanders’s fabled hen-house disaster — although he still hits the barleywine hard. Although less heavy than other barleywines, Bucket Hat Bobby has raisin, toffee, fig, and big caramel flavors with subtle sweetness balanced by bitterness. The only thing missing might be coleslaw, mashed potatoes, and a biscuit.
