Peaks and Pints Proctor Presents: Wag Pet Market and Coffee Kitten Mittens

Let’s pair a Proctor District stocking stuffer with a coffee winter ale!

Wag Pet Market

Wag Pet Market has held a leash for 21 some years in Tacoma’s Proctor District. That’s still a puppy in dog years. The pet store offers a full stock of fun toys and great treats, including a Santa sack full of holiday themed toys. Wag also gives animal birthday shout-outs on Facebook, too. Many of us at Peaks & Pints are pet owners and shop at Wag. We have our eyes on the Rocce’s Bakery’s Nutcracker Crunch, Reindeer Fuel, Holiday Feast and other holiday-themed treats, the holiday collar bows, the treats that look like holiday cookies, can of sardines squeaky, 3 Wee Mice toys, and the squeaky reindeer and Stan Bear plush toy we paired with Kulshan Brewing’s Coffee Kitten Mittens Winter Ale.

Kulshan Coffee Kitten Mittens

Founded in 2012 by Bellingham native David Vitt, Kulshan Brewing is one of the fastest-growing breweries in Whatcom County. Just one year after opening, they doubled the size of their brewhouse to 15 barrels to keep up with demand. In 2015, Kulshan opened a second brewery, affectionately named “K2”, across town with a 30-barrel brewhouse. In 2019, Kulshan won the Peaks & Pints Tournament of Beer: Northwest Pilsners with their German-Style Pilsner. In the summer of 2021, Kulshan opened Trackside Brewery and Beer Garden, a pilot brewery and seasonal, pop-up beer garden located on the former Georgia Pacific paper mill site in downtown Bellingham’s redeveloping waterfront district. December 2023, Peaks & Pints pairs Kulshan’s Coffee Kitten Mittens with pet toys from Wag.

Kulshan adds four different malts — 2-row, Chocolate, roasted barley, and Munich — to Kitten Mittens Winter Ale giving it the rich, medium-bodied winter warmer we adore with a nose of milk chocolate and a touch of brown malt. The body strikes a nice mix of easy malty notes and medium sweet chocolate balanced by earthy hop notes, thanks to the Apollo, Willamette and Fuggle hops. Blended with cold brewed, Mexican roast coffee from Maniac Coffee Roasting, this version of Kitten Mittens boasts notes of raisin, cinnamon, and toasted nuts.

Proctor District

Proctor is a boutique Tacoma neighborhood centered around North 26th Street and Proctor Street. It’s a small district packed with locally-owned and operated niche stores in which every detail — every window display, bushel of fresh produce or interior cheer — is carefully curated for customers. This year, the Proctor Business District dons candy cane stripes and white lights for their month-long “Meet Me At Proctor’s Peppermint Place” celebration. Peaks & Pints craft beer and cider bar, bottle shop and restaurant has called Proctor home for more than seven years. We’re proud to be a part of this wonderful, caring community.
