Peaks and Pints Beer Flight: Kings & Daughters

Share

Like many brewers in Northern Oregon, Kyle Larsen got his start at Full Sail Brewing. Then, in 2010, he walked across the street to Double Mountain Brewery and became head brewer for two other Full Sail alums — Matt Swihart and Charlie Devereaux — while earning a Masters in Brewing Science and Engineering from Heriot Watt University, a public research university based in Edinburgh, Scotland. After a long stint at Siren Craft Brew in the UK, Larsen returned to the Columbia Gorge to add his talent to Thunder Island Brewing and Trap Door Brewing before he and his wife, Kacie, opened their own Kings & Daughters Brewery via Back Forty Beverage, a contract brewery where Larsen serves as acting operational brewmaster. The name Kings & Daughters not only gives a nod to the Larsens’ three young daughters, but King is a family name from past generations on Kyle’s side and it’s also the middle name of their son. K&D’s focus will lean toward the soft side of the flavor and design — sessionable and feminine. Today, Peaks & Pints presents an in-house flight of King & Daughters beer — a flight we’re calling, Peaks and Pints Beer Flight: Kings & Daughters.

Peaks and Pints Beer Flight: Kings & Daughters

Kings & Daughters Jane’s Window

3.6% ABV

“Nothing felt more comforting to our family than trips to Jane Austen’s House in Chawton,” says Kyle Larsen. “We visited the charming Hampshire cottage almost every Friday during our years abroad. We loved her “writing window” that her tiny 18th century walnut table sat near — the humble stage where Jane wrote some of the world’s most delightful scenes and beloved characters. There were always flowers on the sill and a gentle light on her desk. The English are incredible creators of things that are at once humble and comforting, yet incredibly special. With that sentiment, we offer you this mild English ale.”

Kings & Daughters Flora & Fauna

5.8% ABV

Kings & Daughters brewed this IPA with Sarah’s Simon’s new book, Flowers, Feather, & Animal Friends, in mind. Flora & Fauna starts life as a New England style IPA then receives a grand addition of peach, apricot, and sweet cherry puree. Expect stone fruit to be the dominant flavor but don’t count the hops out as they certainly assert themselves in this hazy IPA with a balanced bitterness and inviting fresh hop flavor.

Kings & Daughters Queens & Sons

5.3% ABV

Queens & Sons is inspired by the pub culture Kyle and Kacie Larsen experienced while living in England, as well as by their love for modern IPAs. “We enjoyed nothing more than a weekend connecting with each other and the culture of the English countryside,” writes Kings & Daughters. “These days often led to spending time in walled gardens, where the kids would gather rag-tag bouquets for us, or to long walks through woodlands before settling ourselves under a canopy of leafy trees in the warm months, or indoors by the fire in the cooler months, at favorite pubs. We created our Soft IPA with rituals of connection and culture in mind. Full in flavor, pillowy mouthfeel, complexity, and sessionable drinkability; Queens & Sons is ideal for any season and any session.” Expect a soft, fluffy mouthfeel, balanced sweetness and bitterness, and notes of sweet fruit, mango, orange juice, and lemon ice.

Kings & Daughters Stolen Seeds

7.1% ABV

This drinkable juicy IPA feels like a New England style IPA and a West Coast IPA had a July wedding and everyone is invited. Aside from a higher-than-normal ABV for Kings & Daughters, Hollingbery Mosaic, Simcoe Cryo, El Dorado Incognito, HBC 586 LupoMax, Mosaic LupoMax, WVH Galaxy, and YCH HBC 472 hops produce over-ripe fruit and berry notes, followed by pine-y, dank and cedar wood that finishes nice and dry, with a semi-hazy, orange marmalade color.

Kings & Daughters Gilded

8% ABV

Therefore, to be possess’d with double pomp,
To guard a title that was rich before,
To gild refined gold, to paint the lily,
To throw a perfume on the violet,
To smooth the ice, or add another hue
Unto the rainbow, or with taper-light
To seek the beauteous eye of heaven to garnish,
Is wasteful and ridiculous excess.
— Shakespeare, King John, Act 4, Scene 2

“The Earl of Salisbury may have thought this Double IPA ‘ridiculous excess’, but, though we have no proof, we’re pretty sure Shakespeare would have enjoyed this ale,” writes Kings & Daughters about their Gilded double IPA. Expect a creamy body with sweet citrus, pineapple, and tropical notes.
