Beer gurus Matt McLaren (Orcas Distributing), and Ron Swarner (Peaks & Pints), and Bethany Carlsen (The Funk Busters) explore and celebrate the craft beer industry, community, and history in Tacoma, Washington, and surrounding Pacific Northwest region, with assistance from opinionated beer industry insiders, on the Grit & Grain Podcast every Friday on Amazon, Apple Music, Spotify, Google Play, and iHeartRadio, and Channel 253. The Grit & Grain records episodes at 4:30 p.m. every Wednesday at Peaks & Pints craft beer bar, bottle shop and restaurant in Tacoma’s Proctor District. All are welcome to hang, zdrink along with them, and meet fascinating folks from our regional beer scene. Today, the Grit & Grain records a double episode: Billy Manton discusses his beer days on the East Coast, as well as his most recent job as sales director with Narrows Brewing in Tacoma, at 4:30 p.m. At 5:30 p.m., Lowercase Brewing will join the crew to discuss their history in Seattle, their beloved collaborations, and the formation of Douglas Beer, which is brewed in Tacoma. In conjunction, Peaks & Pints presents an in-house flight of beer from Narrows and Lowercase — a flight we’re calling Peaks and Pints Beer Flight: Grit & Grain Podcast.

Peaks and Pints Beer Flight: Grit & Grain Podcast

Lowercase 10° Czech Pale Lager

4% ABV

The Czech name for a pale lager is svetle pivo, which translates as a light beer. Final gravity is usually between 8° and 14°. Lowercase Brewing found final gravity at 10° for their traditional Czech style light pale lager brewed with Weyerman Bohemian malt and Czech Saaz hops. Lowercase followed a more traditional European lager fermentation profile.=

Lowercase Munich-style Dunkel

4% ABV

Lowercase celebrated their pals Fair Isle Brewing’s fourth anniversary with this collaborative Munich-style dunkel and the most heavy-handed dose of dark Munich malt that has ever been attempted. The two Seattle breweries also loaded it up with a big early addition of Hallertau Mittelfruh hops.

Lowercase Italian Pilsner

5% ABV

Brewed in collaboration with Georgetown Brewing, they modeled this Italian pilsner after Italian brewery Birrificio Italiano’s Tipopils — light and crisp with unique floral undertones. Multiple dry-hop additions as well as a careful attention to water input and fermentation temperature sets this new-world pilsner apart from the rest of the world’s favorite beer style.

Narrows Fathoms CDA

6.9% ABV

The robust embrace of roasted malt meets the lively Northwest hoppy dance in Narrows Brewing’s Cascadian dark ale, better known as a black IPA. It’s a down-to-earth blend of chocolate aroma, dark richness, and hoppy delight.

Narrows HourGlass Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout 2024

11% ABV

This incarnation of is a patiently aged blend of bourbon barrel aged imperial stout. Over two years in their cellar imparts a light raisin character, rich chocolate aroma, and subtle spirits. It’s finished with a conditioning on whole vanilla beans for a decadent touch.
