Peaks and Pints Beer Flight: Great Notion Brewing

Share

In 2016, James Dugan, Andy Miller, and Paul Reiter opened Great Notion Brewing and stunned Portland, Oregon with their New England-style IPAs and boundary-pushing culinary-style beers. The awards followed: World Beer Cup, GABF, Best of Craft Beer Awards, and Oregon Beer Awards, as well as the 2018 #1 IPA in America from Paste Magazine, Ripe IPA. Great Notion was the first Portland brewery to become known for hazies, and the controversial style, and traditionalists hated it. Now the traditionalists are all wearing Great Notion T-shirts. In addition to their hazies, the brewery’s barrel program offers award-winning American sour ales aged for 9-24 months in oak barrels with portion of their sour ales blended with Oregon fruit and freshly emptied bourbon barrels age their imperial stouts on ingredients such as roasted coffee, vanilla beans, chocolate, and maple syrup. Today, Peaks & Pints presents an in-house flight of Great Notion’s beers — a flight we’re calling Peaks and Pints Beer Flight: Great Notion Brewing.

Peaks and Pints Beer Flight: Great Notion Brewing

Great Notion Pretty Pretty Pineapple

6% ABV, draft

Pretty Pretty Pineapple is the newest crusher in Great Notion’s tart ale lineup, this time fermented and sweetened with you guessed it, pineapple gummy candy, and lots of it.

Great Notion Don’t Call It A Comeback

5% ABV, draft

This light-bodied, West Coast pale ale is a collaboration with Abbey Creek Winery in North Plains, Oregon. Together, they kept this one crisp to showcase their favorite lot of dank Simcoe hops for a little dankness and some slight green pepper notes.

Great Notion Over Ripe

7% ABV, draft

Great Notion Over Ripe is a fruited hazy IPA dripping with juicy mangosteen. Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) is an exotic, tropical fruit with a slightly sweet and sour flavor. It’s originally from Southeast Asia but can be found in various tropical regions around the world. Over Ripe is an experimental IPA brewed with Citra, Motueka, and Azacca plus tropical fruit. This beer is saturated with flavors of over ripe fruit like mangosteen, cantaloupe, guava, pineapple, and papaya.

Great Notion Dirty Dancing

8.5% ABV

Dirty Dancing is brewed in collaboration with Other Half Brewing, a Brooklyn, New York, brewery with big juicy IPA game. This time, they took a different approach to dry hop this double IPA choosing lots of Citra accented with Galaxy, Riwaka, and a touch of Sabro. Brewed with oats, this hazy delight is soft on the eyes and the palate, while bold on the nose with notes of passionfruit, white grapefruit, and pineapple soft serve.

Great Notion 8 Ball Jacket

9.2% ABV

For their eight birthday, Great Notion brewed something special that distills a few of their favorite brewing techniques and ingredients into one beer: 8 Ball Jacket double dry hopped hazy double IPA with Phantasm. Brewed with flaked oats and wheat to keep this thing soft, and a fat addition of Citra went into the whirlpool. Two early-stage dry hops were done with double the amount of hops they would normally use in hazy IPA. This helps express maximum tropical aromatics that Citra, Strata, and Nectaron have to offer while the Phantasm powder takes it to a higher level.
