Peaks and Pints Beer Flight: Affogato

Share

It takes two to make a thing go right. Think about it: it takes two to create something memorable. Famous duos have inspired and influenced people from all walks of life. Be it music, movies, television, history, literature, food, sports, business, anime, art, dance, video games, or any other category, dynamic pairings have raised the benchmark to a new level. Among the many excellent mashups in the food world, one of the simplest and most blissful is the affogato, the marriage of two of Italy’s finest exports, espresso and gelato. The word comes from the Italian affogare, to drown, and it’s a pretty accurate summation of the dish, in which a scoop of ice cream is submerged, or close to it, in a shot or double shot of espresso. Both espresso and gelato should be intense, thick, and creamy, neither overwhelming the other nor overwhelming. Brewers have guided their stouts to the next level with this elegant and decadent version. Today, Peaks & Pints presents a Sunday flight of beer brewed with coffee and cream. We’re calling it Peaks and Pints Beer Flight: Affogato.

Peaks and Pints Beer Flight: Affogato

WeldWerks Affogato Stout

6.5% ABV

The dessert you didn’t know your taster glass needed. This 6.5-percent milk stout is WeldWerks Brewing’s ode to the iconic Italian treat, brewed with espresso, ice cream, vanilla, and milk sugar for a rich, creamy pour that blurs the line between coffee and beer.

Eredita The Barn Owl

10.5% ABV

Chris Papallo began homebrewing in 2013 after receiving a Heady Topper “clone” as a Christmas gift from his wife. After falling in love with brewing, Papallo took a course on small-batch brewing at Sterling College. He became a brewer and cellarman at Twelve Percent Beer Project from October 19 to June 2020. Then, he became the assistant brewer at Hill Farmstead Brewery from June 2020 to August 2022 before opening Eredità Beer in North Haven, Connecticut, at the state-of-the-art facilities at Twelve Percent. Switch out your iced vanilla latte for this for Eredità’s The Barn Owl imperial coffee stout brewed with dark and roasted malts, milk sugar, espresso sourced from Brazil, Costa Rica, and Guatemala, and vanilla beans sourced from Papua New Guinea.

AleSmith Speedway Stout: Rocky Road Edition

12% ABV

Brewed for the 2024 AleSmith Brewing Speedway Grand Prix, their signature coffee imperial stout is brewed with cacao nibs, roasted almonds, roasted walnuts, Madagascar vanilla beans, coffee, and natural flavors.

AleSmith Barrel-Aged Speedway Stout: Coffee Cake Edition

12.67% ABV

AleSmith grabbed their signature coffee imperial stout and aged it in bourbon barrels with coffee, vanilla, and cinnamon.

Dogfish Head Affogato World Wide Stout

15% ABV

Brewed with a ridiculous amount of barley, Dogfish Head’s World Wide Stout is a dark, rich, and roasty imperial stout. This year’s iteration, Affogato World Wide Stout, takes this beloved beer to the next level, with added notes of espresso and sweet vanilla for a liquid version of the well-known Italian treat. This ageable ale is made with a blend of 7 different grains and then infused with locally roasted coffee and sweet vanilla.
