Season of Strangers performs at The Valley tonight.

MONDAY, JAN. 23 2017: South Sound events + craft beer …

The Valley + Peaks and Pints = 1980s and 1990s

Rhythm & Rye + Pig Bar = Legit

SHOEGAZE SEASON

Tacoma musician Lino Fernandez has been rocking the South Sound in way or another, from garage rock band the Dignitaries to pop band Bandolier to the all-Filipino Hall and Oates cover band the Little Donuts. Fernandez’ new band, Season of Strangers, is a pretty substantial departure from his other projects. With Mandy McGee, the two singers drench their guitars into the murky milieu of the early ’90s, a la shoegaze. Catch Season of Strangers with Oakland’s Nasty Dilemma, and darkwave DJ BS-System at 9 p.m. in The Valley.

PREFUNK: Break out your Reebok Pumps and parachute pants! It’s time for another Peaks and PintsSudsPop and we’re throwing an “I Love ’80s” party. Pacific Brewing & Malting Co. continues its run as this month’s SudsPop brewery with DJ Andy Kenser in full control of the jukebox, beginning at 6 p.m. This week’s contest is a ’80s dance-off, fueled by Pacific Brewing and Wingman Brewers’ collaboration Tahomes IPA, brewed with Hopsteiner experimental hops. The Running Man, The MC Hammer Dance, The Sprinkler, The Moonwalk, The Kriss Kross Jump Dance and other famous dance moves will all be fair play. Charm necklaces, Members Only jackets and Jordache Jeans are encouraged. OK, enough, you get the picture. It’s going to be tubular. OK, OK.

RAMS & RYE

Saxophonist, sideman, arranger and band leader Bill “Rams” Ramsay runs his band with the experience of a master. Why wouldn’t he? Ramsay’s career spans decades; he has played with some of the best including the Buddy Morrow band, Maynard Ferguson Band, Ray Mckinley Band, Benny Goodman Octet, Duke Ellington Orchestra, Grover Mitchell’s All-Star Orchestra, Cab Calloway, Sweets Edison, Les Brown, Mel Lewis, Gene Harris and Quincy Jones Band. He is a Seattle Jazz Hall of Fame inductee and has also been a member of the Seattle Jazz Repertory Orchestra since its founding in 1995. The Bill Ramsay Big Band will consume downtown Olympia’s Rhythm & Rye club at 8 p.m.

PREFUNK: Pig Bar, the little wood-wall bar tucked off the side of Dickerson’s BBQ in downtown Olympia, hosts Lagunitas Brewing Co. from 5-7 p.m. According to Pig Bar hype, you’ll “partake in epic swag, beer knowledge, laughter, and friends!! Oh yeah, let’s not forget the beer!! Can’t wait to see you at the pig, and as always, good vibes to all!!” So that sounds exciting.
